I have four live oaks, two in the front and two in the backyard. For approximately six months, we have noticed that cuttings from these trees on the grass. I suspect it might be squirrels, but I cannot be sure because I never see when they fall on the lawn. Do you know what causes this? I've included two photos hoping it can help someone figure out what's going on.

I captured a swarm on 5/22 and placed them in a Nuc box with five frames of old comb. How long can I keep them in there before I have to put them in a ten frame box? How long should I wait to open them up to check for the Queen and brood? I fed them a quart of 50/50 sugar water is that enough or should I give them more? Thanks for your help!

We are looking for a few choices on good trees to plant next to out garage - it would get some morning light and by 1 PM good light until sundown. The spot is on our garage's west side and our wind comes predominantly from the NW. As we are near or at 70 years of age, we would like a tree that would be hardy, drought friendly, and a tree that would grow somewhat quickly, so that we could enjoy it. I have heard of the Lantern Tree, but do not know if it would be happy here. We have Ponderosa, gamble oaks, mountain mahogany, sage and lots of happy weeds. The deer eat almost everything, including our firs and spruces, which were imported. Thanks!

Invasive Grass Species? #752397

I live in Williamsport, and my property is adjacent to 2 planted agricultural fields. I have working to improve my lawn over the last few years, but seems to be dealing with the expansion of an invasive grass. At the end of last season, I aerated and over seeded my acreage with a fescue mix. The lower part of the property seems to have an expanding grass species which does not cut well. My commercial mower only seems to take the top of the grass off at a variety of speeds and heights. Can you help me to identify this so I can work on getting rid of it? Thank you!

Hi, I have a roof that gets mossy and would like to know what I can do to eliminate or at least suppress this growth. My gutters empty into pop up valves in my yard so whatever you recommend needs to not damage my landscaping. I prefer a powder or something like that that is easy to apply. Liquids are ok too if need be. Thanks.

Hi, Squirrels have stripped a portion of the bark from a mature maple tree limb. The area is about 7" x 7" and is across the top of the limb. See the picture. What can I do: (1) to prevent further damage; and (2) to repair the damage. Thanks.

My emerging rhubarb leaves (not the large fully grown ones) look burnt. They are not wilted, but appear burnt, dry, and crispy to touch. The stalks are stiff and still standing up. Is this cause for concern?

I have a Douglas fir tree that has lots of dead needles, holes in the trunk (from birds?), and looks "thin". Two photos attached I also have a Ponderosa pine with lots of mostly-brown needles. I found no "D" shaped beetle holes. One photo attached Please advise Thank You

Two-part question: 1) i have an old wood pile that's now mixed with soil. I'm going to add a bit more soil and plant veggies. Anything I need to know? 2) That wood pile has 6 inches of oak leaves piled on it currently. Can those leaves be incorporated into the planting bed or should they be removed? Thank you!

I was told that having a dripline watering of an established arborvitae hedge, 30 yr.old crabapple and a rhododendron harms them because they don't send their roots deep, they go to the surface. Is this true?

Hello! It was recommended to me that I share this with you as it sounds like you have some sharp critter identification minds in your organization. My wife and I spotted a few pale threadlike worms wiggling quite actively atop some leaves sticking out of our lawn today and wondered what they were. Most importantly we're hoping to identify if they're anything we should be concerned about with ourselves, our toddler, and our dog running around out there. I have many small black winged insects with a red hump behind the head on my flowering thyme in my herb container on my deck. I googled what they could be and they look very much like "lovebugs". They share all the same identifying characteristics. But I read that these insects are prevalent in Florida and found no information on their presence here in Montgomery county, Md. Are they here also now ? Is there something I should do to get them away from my herbs? I deadheaded the thyme to get rid of the flowers and am hoping this does the trick. But main question: Are these lovebugs or something else? Thanks!! Jeanie Roscher

Identification of Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) #752328

Based on internet research it appears that the knockout roses on our property are infected with RRD. Our landscaper believes that is the case. We took a sample to several nurseries and one said yes and the other said herbicide or cold weather. Because we believe we have it and the remedy is to remove the infected plants we would like confirmation prior to that step. I can bring cuttings to you if necessary. Please advise. Thanks,

viburnums rapidly loosing all folage #752323

I have 3 Snowball bushes (opulus sterile). In a matter of 4 days all of the folage has disappeared. I don't mean that the shrubs have shed their leaves, but rather all of the folage is gone as if consumed. No pests vey visable prior to this. The shrub leafed out normally and even blumed lightly. The same thing happened last year. The same thing happened to an American cranberry last year, but not yet this year. Any thoughts?

getting rid of ground elder #752322

Hello. We have a large flower bed that has been taken over by ground elder. We took a lot of it out last year, stems, leaves and roots, but it has come back. My husband wants to start digging up all of the flowers (lilies, irises, forget me nots, peonies) and keep them in pots while we work on removing the ground elder. This may take a few months. I have a few questions about this process.

1. Is this the best way to deal with ground elder?

2. Will digging flowers up before they bloom this year harm them? Will they flower this year if we dig them up now? Will they come back next year? How long would they be OK in pots?

3. We also have 3 very old, large rhododendrons in the same flower bed. How can we best kill the ground elder around them? Do we need to try to dig them up?

4. Is it possible to actually get all of the ground elder out? 

Any other advice you have about dealing with ground elder is appreciated.

Baby Oak Tree - should I stake it? #752320

Hello! In May 2020 we planted a red oak tree in our yard. This spring, it has developed such a big crown that it is bending over with the weight of its leaves. It does not appear the roots are disturbed or losing hold. The trunk is just bent and it gets worse when it rains and leaves are wet. Trunk is only 1” thick and the whole tree is 7 feet tall. Should I add some support so the trunk grows up straight? If so, what method is recommended? If not, can I expect my little tree to straighten out on its own?
