Red and black beetle damaged spearmint plants #752378

Asked May 26, 2021, 5:13 PM EDT

What is this beetle? It probably destroyed most of my spearmint last year but I could never find the insect.

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

The insect in your photo is a four-lined plant bug nymph. They are the stage that feed on herbs. Removal of the nymphs from the plants is the least invasive method of control. Below is a link that gives information on the insect as well as control measures.

Thanks for the help. These are now also on my peppermint.  I'm going to try picking them off.
