Pine blight #752332

Asked May 26, 2021, 3:44 PM EDT

Hi, I am experiencing die off on my pine tree. It appears to be traveling up the boughs from bottom to top. Can you identify what the problem may be and if /and how does it need to be treated? Thank you.

Expert Response

Hello- It is very helpful to see the tree as a whole, too. Would you please attach a picture taken far enough back so our expert can see the whole tree from the soil line to the top branch? Thank you

Thank you, Ginny, for attaching a picture of the entire tree. The needles on the bottom branches appear to be infected with needlecast, a fungus that effectively blocks the stomata, or the holes through which the tree "breathes." This is a common ailment of spruce trees, particularly blue spruce, because of our humid environment. You can read more about needlecast, including treatment options here:

https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rhizosphaera-needle-cast

In summary, the needles that have been lost can never be recovered. But the new growth can be treated each year to prevent it from becoming infected. If the tree is short enough, you may be able to treat it yourself. Tips to avoid prolonging the infection as well as treatment options are described in the article at the link provided.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,

Julie

Thank you Julie.
This is very helpful information.
Is this an airborne virus as I have 3 other similar trees?
I hope to be able to save the tree with your suggestions.

Have a great week.

Hi Ginny,

The spores that cause the symptoms are always present. Some species of trees are more susceptible than others. So, I would keep a close watch over the other trees and only treat if symptoms arise.

Thanks, again,

Julie
