Ailing White Pines #753341

We have three white pines, originally planted in fall, 2018. Two of them died and were replaced in fall 2019. The landscapers who replaced them told us they died because of poor drainage. They are planted in mostly clay, in a fairly low area. I dug a trench about 18" deep and installed a french drain which runs off into a ditch. When I penetrated the root ball hole with the trench, it was full of water but drained into the french drain. Now, the two replacement trees look like they are dying. In the attached photos, the tree on the far right is the original survivor, which appears to be in good health. The center one is the worst, so the closeup photos are of it (back side). Does this look like it could still be a drainage problem?

We have two of what I think are bluish long leaf upright junipers. The snow weight was not kind and I don’t believe they were ever pruned . Can or should they be ? There are definitely dead spot towards the inner part but green on the outer growth . Please view pics . Salvageable or remove and plant? In this smaller space? Thank you!!

Maple tree problems #753321

My maple tree seems to be taken over with aphids. Is it something that I can leave for the rain to take care of, or do I need to spray with neem oil? The tree is definitely mature and the leaves have black spots all the way up the tree. I recently sprayed boxwoods with neem oil to treat for aphids. I also have lots of ants in the dirt at the base of the tree. Is this a problem for my tree?

Prepping soil for shade-loving perennials under blue spruce #753309

Hi! This past weekend, we pulled up landscape fabric and as much mulch as we could shovel under our massive (3 stories?) blue spruce in our back yard. I'd like to prep the soil under the tree in even we're able to plant shade-loving perennials this fall (hostas, ferns, wild ginger??) underneath. Can you please advise as to what composting material/soil we should get to set us up for this coming fall? And any other suggestions for plantings? Thanks so much!

Peach Tree Problem - Bacterial Spot?? #753305

I have a peach tree I bought from a nursery a couple weeks ago. When planting it, I noticed spots on the leaves. The spots are more noticeable on the plant now, some leaves are curling and some have fallen off, and I noticed some peeling bark on the trunk. My findings on the internet suggest possible bacterial spot. I’ve included some pictures. Can you help me diagnose the problem? Thank you. Dawn Bagley

New Construction Urban Infill Home #753297

Hi All, We are having a new construction home built in the Roland Park neighborhood of Baltimore. It's an old neighboorhood with plenty of mature trees. We'll have a small front yard (about 20 x 40 feet), a smallish back yard about 40 x 40 and two side yards about 10x40. We have 2 kids aged 9 & 12, and a future labrador. All that said, i'm not very interested in mowing the lawn weekly. I'm thinking about growing 100% microclover. Perhaps in both the front and back yards. The front will get very little use/foot traffic, while the back yard will likely get moderate use. The house is South facing. The side yards are very shady and the front & back will get some sun. What are you thoughts / recommendations?

vine maple small curled leaves #753295

What could be wrong with this vine maple? It was transplanted in the fall of 2019 from a sunny location to our home in North Albany where it receives quite a bit of sun also. Last year the leaves were small, but we thought it was just adjusting to its new home. This year they are small, curled and red on most of the tree. But the last leaves to emerge are larger, green and open. We didn't see anything on the underside except a small spider on one. It gets quite a bit of sun and we are giving it plenty of water. We do not use herbicides.

We have a steep hillside descending from the back of our property down to a city street. Last year we had two very large trees removed, and Elm and an Ash, both of which had died. Would it be possible for someone to advise us on the current stability of the hillside and possibly the need to plant more trees?

I bought a house that has Redstem Filagree through the yard. Is there a ground over I can plant that would choke it out? It is not irrigated in zip code 80125. I have one area of sun and one of shade, so h in could two different ones if needed, if there is no groundcover that can to that, should I do raw a broadleaf weed killer and try to start fresh? Some if it is hilly, so I want to avoid erosion. Thank you so much for your help!

My maple tree does not look healthy #753276

What could be causing my maple tree to look so bad? The middle section of the tree is kind of bare and some of the branches have no leaves. Is there anything I can do? I looked for insects and only found 2 small black worms and a flying insect. History- This maple tree is over 30 years. It was planted by the previous owners. The soil is pretty sandy. The tree is growing on the corner of the property line and the yard slopes to a ditch on one side.

Snowball Bush in dire situation #753275

My Snowball bush, which use to always be lush and beautiful is in very bad shape. It did not bloom last year and the leaves came on very late. This year the leaves came and it bloomed, but small snowballs, now within a matter of days this weekend it looks like skeleton. The leaves are being eaten to the edge of the leaf itself. I do not see any bugs or insects.I have attached pictures. I don't know how old the bush is, I bought my home 11 years ago and it was as tall as the roof line at that time. Can my bush be saved? What should I do? Thank you very much!

Hi! I live in UA and have spent a lot of money protecting 6 newly planted trees from Cicadas, and there currently are none where I live, (Upper Arlington, right across from Griggs Reservoir the actual dam) on the east side. I know Dublin, Worthington, and other parts of UA have the cicadas. My question is, I want to unwrap my trees, as the branches are trying to grow. How long do I have to wait to do this? How long do I have to wait to see bugs in my burg and if I haven't seen any by now, (June 1, 2021) does that mean they aren't coming to my area? and I can unwrap my trees?? thanks!!

Is my ash tree infected with emerald ash borer? #753262

Hello. In April 2020, my budding ash tree was frozen by a run of several way below 0 degree days. Parts of the tree never recovered and leafing out was very late. It had been inoculated against the borer twice before this freeze. This year it has leafed out by with many bare branches. My tree service says it it has the borer, but I would like to be sure before I have it removed. Obviously the tree service would make money from the removal. treating ash trees for ash borer #753247

We have a tree partially damaged by the ash borer three years ago, but it is now viable, with two years of leafing out and enough canopy. The tree is very large, 22" in diameter. Our question is this. Two years ago the tree leafed out, and was then treated with the insecticide useeated on all of our other ash trees by Davy Tree Company. On this tree, all the leaves fell off, then gradually leafed out again over the next several weeks. The Davy Tree expert has not heard of this before. Our question is why this happened and should the tree be treated with the same concentration and amount as the other trees, and as it was two years ago.

I have a large (75') shagbark hickory in my backyard in Ann Arbor that has not leafed out this year. Last year it produced lots of nuts so I assume it was healthy. There are several other healthy appearing shag bark hickory trees in my neighbor's yard just 10'to 40' away. Any idea what might be the problem? Is it conclusively dead or is there some hope?
