Prepping soil for shade-loving perennials under blue spruce #753309

Asked June 01, 2021, 3:20 PM EDT

Hi! This past weekend, we pulled up landscape fabric and as much mulch as we could shovel under our massive (3 stories?) blue spruce in our back yard. I'd like to prep the soil under the tree in even we're able to plant shade-loving perennials this fall (hostas, ferns, wild ginger??) underneath. Can you please advise as to what composting material/soil we should get to set us up for this coming fall? And any other suggestions for plantings? Thanks so much!

Expert Response

Your plant choices are excellent and will look very attractive. Mulching under the tree now to depth of 2-4 inches would be a good start. The mulch will conserve moisture and break down into compost. It is very good for your tree. The plants you have chosen don’t need rich soil so compost and mulch should be all you need. Insert the plants into the soil and try to disturb the roots as little as possible. You won’t want to more than 4 inches at one time because doing so smothers tree roots.
you could add big leaf aster and wild geraniums your plant list but there are so many wonderful hosta in all kinds of sizes, colors and textures they could be ll you need.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I read recently that we should put down fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content? Yes? No?

Thanks again!

Your plant choices won’t need extra nitrogen. I like to use a slow release fertilizer. It won’t burn the plants.

Thanks SO MUCH!!!
