Redstem Filagree #753285

Asked June 01, 2021, 1:49 PM EDT

I bought a house that has Redstem Filagree through the yard. Is there a ground over I can plant that would choke it out? It is not irrigated in zip code 80125. I have one area of sun and one of shade, so h in could two different ones if needed, if there is no groundcover that can to that, should I do raw a broadleaf weed killer and try to start fresh? Some if it is hilly, so I want to avoid erosion. Thank you so much for your help!

Expert Response

Hello Donna,
Thanks for reaching out to us regarding your issues with Red Stem Filaree.  Unfortunately, I did not find any good recommendations for a ground cover to help eradicate this weed.  Since it is an annual, you are likely to have the seed embedded in the ground which could mean you will need to utilize some measures for a number of years.  I am going to attach links to two different fact sheets that will hopefully give you enough information to make the best decision for you.  There are both chemical and organic solutions.  On the organic side, I don't know how large of a space you are dealing with, but pulling, tilling and mulching are known to be pretty effective.  There are several suggestions for chemical approaches, I can't recommend a particular brand of chemical solution, but the fact sheets name ingredients you can look for or ask for at your local garden store.

Best of luck!  Don't hesitate to reach back out if you have additional questions.

Thank you so much!  Is there a benefit to letting it take over?  What are the negatives of it letting it grow?  Since it is all over the area, I probably can’t stop the seeds from coming in my yard even if I want to.

Hi Donna,
From what I am reading, red stem filaree is considered a class C noxious weed here in Colorado.

Noxious Weeds are terrestrial or aquatic exotic plants that out-compete natives for light, space and nutrients. By displacing native plants, weeds eliminate necessary forage, shelter and habitat for wildlife.

A class C noxious weed is one you may want to have a plan to control or suppress.  I agree that it will likely get into your yard, but since it's an annual you could probably get it under decent control in your yard if you keep up with it in early spring.  It's a winter annual so it should be pretty obvious in early spring and if you get it before it flowers and seeds, you may have some luck.  In one of those fact sheets I sent, it also mentioned something about a pre-emergence pesticide in spring.
