Tree Grafting #753320

Asked June 01, 2021, 3:38 PM EDT

I have a chestnut tree that is partially dead. I'd like to propagate it. Is grafting a good option?

Hello Kate,

Are you a commercial grower??

This is what they say on

Seedling vs. Grafted Trees - In today’s market, all commercial chestnut orchards should be established with cultivars that have been selected by horticulturalists for superior qualities. These cultivars are not produced through seed but are cloned by grafting or budding onto seedlings that will support the chosen cultivar. In this manner, a single tree with beneficial traits can be copied millions of times by simply cutting small branches from the chosen tree and attaching it onto the stem of planted seedlings. Conversely, seedlings are the result of sexual recombination between a known mother tree and an unknown father, resulting in endless variability and unreliable characteristics making them suboptimal for commercial production. I don't think this would work on a partially dead tree.

I'm not. I just have a cool old chestnut tree that I'd hate to see die off.
Maybe I need to try growing a seedling? What resources do you have on that?

Hello Kate,

Thought you might like Quick Guidelines to Planting Chestnuts at this link: https://acf.org/ma-ri/the-project/quick-growing-guide/

Also, I recommend you try starting 3 to 5 nuts/seeds, not just one, because seedlings can die back quite often from damping off, squirrel damage, etc

Wow, this is incredibly helpful. Thank you!

I have questions about pear trees as well -can I just ask in this email chain, or submit a new inquiry?
