Small white elongated objects, coated with fibrous/cottony material, found in sheltered/moist area (empty, stacked pots lying on the ground) in close proximity to Daikon radish, green onion, and common lawn plants. First spotted May 27, 2021 in residential area of Southeast DC. Any help with identifying them is much appreciated. Thanks, Julius

Hello, we have a 10 year old Honey Crisp tree that is having some issues and we don't know what to do. Last year we had a bumper crop, but all of the apples were small, misshapen, and had brown spots all through the fruit. This year, not a single flower. Any ideas?

We have a lovely plum tree which had black fungus last year - and we cut all of those branches off in Nov. Now we notice a lot of swollen brown spots (like the black, but these are brown), on many more branches. Can this tree be saved? Recently on a sunny day we noticed hundreds very small red bugs around our walls, pool and home in Annapolis which someone identified as chiggers. When collecting samples of the insects they were fragile and simply turned into red streaks. The question: Are these chiggers or clover mites>

Landscape Rocks around a Big Established Red Pine Tree #753188

We recently added 15’ X 15’ of large and medium size rocks (5 cubic yards) around a 80-100 foot Red Pine. After I finished the job my son came over for a visit and questioned if that would hurt the tree. This is something we never considered. We live on a very shaded lot in Nisswa, and the tree (up to this point) is in great shape. Will the weight of the rocks hurt the tree? As much as it pains me (and my aching back) to even think about it we can find a new home for the rocks.

We may have bird mites in our home, we had a dermatologist do a biopsy on the body bites. This insect may have entered by the seed feeder being in the home several times overnight. Can you direct us to an expert in the field and best way(s) to treat it?

Hi. I have a conefower or black eyed susan (sorry I don't know which this is) that had 1 stem out of 4 turn completely black. I have never seen anything like this before. Photo attached. No other plants (many near it) have been affected.

The leaves are curling up as if it were a water problem.  Lately new leaves are sprouting and are misshapened. I have sprayed with .4oz captain, .4oz liq7 per gal of water, with a few drops of dawn as a surfactant.  Any help would be appreciated..

I grind a small amount of organic flax see each morning, and cook it with my organic rolled oats. My understanding is that the nutritional value is best if it is ground just before eating. Here is my question: if I cook a triple portion of this mix and then save 2/3 of it in the refrigerator for the next two days, is the nutritional value somewhat diminished? That is does the ground flax seed lose out since I am not eating it all that first morning? If the answer is yes, then I will return to just making one portion each day. Thanks for your help with this question.

Loud small frog #753165

Hello. We have a pond for our ducks. For the past week, we've had a small frog that is loud inhabit the rocks around it. It is really hard to find them because they can hide amongst the rocks. But when I have seen them, they are really small. This small frog is no bigger than the last digit of my pinky finger. The bad part, is that it is loud; loud enough it keeps us awake at night. Is there something we can do to make them be quiet or drive them away? It is really hard to find them because they can hide amongst the rocks.

Disposal of suspected spoiled high-acid food #753164

Hello, I discovered a jar of my home-pickled beets whose lid popped while in storage. I know that I need to dispose of it, but am wondering the proper procedure since it was a high-acid product. All the instructions I can find online and in my canning book appear to be for low-acid, botulism-suspect products. Do I really need to go through the whole detox procedure (boiling the jar with contents in and a ring on, followed by bleaching everything), or can I dump the contents and clean the jar? I have 14 green giant 10ft trees and some are really changing color. Yellowing and some have brown in them. I’ve been watering 1-2 times a week and just added fertilizer 10-10-10 this past Friday. Here is a picture of one

Year old Kentucky Coffee Trees don't make it through the winter. #753161

In 2019 I bought 12 Coffee trees from a nursery. They were 2 years old and in 1 gallon pots. It was early spring. The trees never leafed out. I got a refund in July. I planted four Coffee trees from seed that same year. They spouted. I put them in 1 gallon pots and put them in a sheltered spot for the winter. So far this spring, they show no signs of life. Do these trees not handle Minnesota winters well unless they are planted in the ground?

Our lawn grass near our Blue Spruce and other evergreen trees does not grow well. I understand the rain water is acidic when it comes off the evergreen trees. Would application of granular lime help? If so, how often and how much should be used? I have a rotary spreader. Thank you..

I’m concerned that my sweet peas have mosaic virus. I’m not sure how or why they would catch it. I’ve not had this before but I pulled up most of what I thought were infected plants and now there are more. I’m hoping I was wrong and they aren’t actually infected. If they are, how can I prevent this happening next year? Are my snapdragons, bells of Ireland and 84 dahlias at risk of catching it too? Thank you.

Hello. May 2020 I had a Minnesota Redbud professionally planted on the west side of the house. It does not receive full sun due to a King Maple, and an ash tree. Sun is maybe five hours a day. This spring every branch was covered in flowers. It is May 2021 and the leaf development is poor and small, and missing many leaves on the branches. Question: Can this tree be dug up, and moved to a sunnier location? Would it survive a move? Thank you so much.

Blueberry plant problem #753132

The leaves on our blueberry plants aren't looking well. Brown on the edges. The newer plants were put in ground 3 days ago, but the older plants (in ground for a year) are starting to look the same. We found 1 hornworm on one of the older blueberry plants. Worried the newer plants may have been overwatered/ excess rainfall when first in the ground.
