difference between a clover mite and chigger #753195

Asked June 01, 2021, 9:33 AM EDT

Recently on a sunny day we noticed hundreds very small red bugs around our walls, pool and home in Annapolis which someone identified as chiggers. When collecting samples of the insects they were fragile and simply turned into red streaks. The question: Are these chiggers or clover mites>

Expert Response

Looks and sounds like the common behavior of clover mites: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/clover-mites This explains what's going on and why. (The link at the bottom shows the bright red clover mites like you have. A good read, too.)

Here is info on chiggers (you'll notice that they are found in grass, not crawling up houses): https://extension.umd.edu/resource/clover-mites

Thank you for the quick response.

It is my understanding that chiggers, which look similar,  are much smaller than clover mites and barely visible to the naked eye.

Sorry. Meant to attach our page on chiggers: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/chiggers Note the size!

Yes, they are minute and you would not see hordes of them.
