Sad peas #751987

Last year and this I have had a problem with green peas where the stem wiltz just above the ground. For a while the upper part of the plant looks fine while about a half inch section just above the ground shrivels to nothing. Then of course the rest of the plant shrivels and dies. Because this is above ground level I've wondered if it's an insect. Or is it merely dehydration? Thoughts?

Decomposing flipped sod #751985

Hello! I have decided to convert a large portion of my grass lawn into a garden. I rented a sod cutter, tore about 2 inches off, and have decided to flip it over. I like the prospect of retaining the top soil and knowing that, as the grass breaks down, it will feed what I plant. I'm concerned about the weed bank, however, as this definitely disturbed the ground. What is the best way to decompose that sod and minimize the risk that the weeds germinate, or grow through from below for that matter? I've read mixed suggestions: either put a black tarp over it (wet it down first?), solarize with a clear tarp (are we warm enough in MN yet?), or let it dry out and kill the grass roots then cover or plant. Suggestions?

What is causing ripened shriveled berries on just a few limb tips on my blueberry bush despite otherwise healthy looking trees and other berry growth. Previously told bushes too old, and bushes have recurring berry fungus.

Apple blossom issues #751951

Hello! I’m having issues with my Apple tree. I believe it’s a golden delicious variety. These past few years we have had tons of blossoms but they dry up and fall off before fruiting. Thought maybe it was frost related but don’t believe it has been hit by frost after blossoms set. The tree does have some sort of scabs or blisters or rust of some sort. No idea. But the leaves have marks on them. Tree seems otherwise healthy. Can anyone help me identify and treat? Thanks in advance!

So, my crabapple tree seemed to be thriving the last 5 years. This year, however, the tree fell over. It turns out that something ate its roots. When I looked in the hole that had held the tree, I didn’t see any tunnels. Any idea what did it in? I live 5 miles from Sunriver.

Hello! We added about 3-4” of yard debris compost into our garden. We got from our local landscaping company as a soil amendment. The leaves on our cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and squash are all starting to turn yellow. The cucumbers have it the worst. I don’t know if it’s from the compost or what. I haven’t done a soil test. Any advice? Could I till in some top soil? Thanks for your help! Noel

Hello! My husband and I recent purchased a 6 acre parcel of land, approximately 350' X 650'. We are hoping to tree line the entire lot for privacy this year in hopes of building on the lot in 2 or 3 years and eventually starting a small organic family farm with an acres designated for orchard, and acre for berries, etc. I would like to learn what types of border trees may be the best option to line the perimeter with this Summer that will provide us with sufficient privacy in 4 to 5 years. I am interested in a wall of lilacs on the front and back sides of the lot and then some type of evergreens that are deer resistant on the 650' sides. I am assuming 2 rows deep for more privacy. I would welcome any insight or advice as we are brand new to this! Thanks! Jen

There appear (via night-time cameras) to be 3 young foxes and 1 adult living in a natural area adjacent to our house here in Hillsborough. They appear to be active from nightfall to dawn, including on our front porch. The remains of small animals on our front lawn is an almost daily discovery. Would appreciate any advice as to whether they will move on or do we need to learn how to live alongside. You counsel would be appreciated.

Hi! We are replacing pine trees that are old and unhealthy. We have planted Black hills spruce...3 so far. We want to add a few more pines/evergreens. Are fat alberts a healthy variety? We are in Bloomington, MN and have sandy soil. Is there any other pines/evergreens that are hardy. Also, what is the best time of year to plant ball and burlap pines. Thank you! Marie

(1) I picked up a spiked loosestrife plant at a friend's plant exchange a few weeks ago. I haven’t planted it because when I got home I couldn’t determine whether it was the same as Siberian loosestrife--a plant I know is an invasive. We live close to the Willamette River, and I don’t want to take a chance with a plant that could spread beyond our yard. What’s you recommendation? (2) We have a young red-leafed ornamental plum and a mature pink dogwood. Both have limbs that bend much more than they once did after rainfall. Is this because the cell structure of their limbs may have been damaged during the ice storm? Is there any way to correct this problem so what had been vertical or obtuse-angled limbs don’t become permanently bent towards the ground?

We have several white pines that are turning yellow. One is all yellow, the others are still mostly green, but are turning yellow. I read to cut the affected lower branches off in an attempt to save the tree. Is this what you recommend? Thank you.

What to do about possible arsenic contamination in new garden space #751877

The previous owners of our house used "green-boards" many years ago to encircle their garden plot, even though this type of wood preservative was banned and replaced back around 2005 or so. Subsequently, I've removed the boards and disposed of them, and have attempted to remove some of the surrounding soil, as well, but still have questions about the toxicity level and whether the soil is still contaminated and therefore dangerous for using in the garden area. Would it be possible to test for this type of contamination? Could someone advise me on how to proceed? Many thanks in advance, Cliff

Norwegian Pine Lightening Damage #751853

About a year and a half ago or so, we spoke with someone in Extension and we sent some pictures and you were able to diagnose that our 50 yr old + Norwegian Pine had been hit by Lighting and you suggested letting it go through the season and see how it did.

Attached are some photos of how it looks currently. If you need better ones, please let us know. We did have new growth on the remaining branches this spring. Can we top and or trim the tree at this point and save it?

bugs on milkweed #751813

Hi, I am trying to grow milkweed and have some established. This spring I have seen many of these beetle/bugs within the top row or two of the growing milkweed - they seem to be either eating the tops off or at a minimum eating the topmost leaves. Can you tell me what they are. They are very hard shelled. Typically I find one per plant (perhaps two). I'd say that of the 20 milkweed plants I had growing, approximately 40% had one of these on it. Any ideas on what it is, do they do permanent damage to the plant, and are they something that I should be watchful for and remove as I see them i.e. do they multiply quickly? Any help and information on what they are and what to do to keep them in check (if necessary) would be wonderful. Thanks for the expertise. Kindly, John Kroll

The 2021 Periodical Cicada brood in Jessamine County #751803

I'm confused. Periodical Cicadas began showing up on the side of my house in Nicholasville last night. What brood do we have? Brood X is a 17 year form but I had no cicadas 17 years ago in May-June 2004. However - I had a big emergence in May and June 2008 (13 years ago) and even drove down to the Indian Falls area at 11:00 pm on 5/28/2008 to photograph newly-emerged adults handing from the nymph cases. At the time I assumed these were Brood XIV, a different 17 year brood, but XIV cicadas are not due to emerge again until 2025. So, if we have Brood X now, why weren't they here in 2004?
