hi. i've planted a couple of new varieties of heirloom winter squash and noticed strange leaves. are the leaves sickly or what? never seen the white vein areas before.

Expert Response

White veins in some squash and pumpkin varieties is normal. If you are concerned you can contact the seed company who produced the seed and ask one of their reps the same question. If the plant is growing well over the next few weeks I would think it is normal. The plants do look like they are a little nitrogen deficient with our recent run of cool morning temps. The soil microbes may be slow in converting nitrogen to the available form with the cool overnight temps.

thanks for the fast reply. i checked online for those squash types and sure enough the white veining is normal. i will give them a little extra shot of nitrogen to perk them up some. sounds like warm weather is on the way. yay!
