Sad Apple Tree #752316

Hello! One of my two small apple trees is really suffering. Last year it was severely affected by cedar apple rust. This spring, it bloomed quite well, but now the leaves are stunted and I am not sure it’s still growing. In comparison, our other tree is fully leafed out. Is there anything I can do to help it recover? Is there still hope? Thank you!! Linnea

Oregon Blue Lake pole beans #752315

In 1996 I made an accidental cross between navy bean (bush habit) mothers, and Oregon blue lake (vine habit) fathers that produced a bush habit green/dryshell bean that produced up to 4 ounces of dry bean seed per bush (averaging 6 beans per pod, up to 9 per!). Being "stringless" they can be field dried, as they don't split and cast seed. I failed to plant for several years and have lost the variant (2 years max on seed viability). Blue Lake beans seem to be very short of the 20 to 30 foot vines I got from OBL's. Where can I find those champions to cross with great northern (this time)?

Grinding or scraping of exposed tree roots #752314

We reside in a townhome association in Mendota Heights and have many mature, 20+ year old trees that have exposed roots, possibly due to clay soil. Our Association Manager is proposing the grinding down of the exposed roots. Some are concerned this may be damaging to the trees and bring about their demise. Could you please respond with the best methods for treating mature trees with heavily exposed roots and should we allow the roots to be “ground down.” Thank You! Is this oak wilt? #752296

Hello, An oak in my Minneapolis yard started budding out like normal this spring. Yesterday I noticed half the leaves were shriveled and dying. Could this be oak wilt? I also noticed a crack in the trunk...but I couldn't tell if it was just the bark or it went deeper. The diameter of the tree is about 6 inches. Thank you!

What type of plant is this? It was planted by a professional landscaper 3 years ago who told me what it was but I’ve forgotten. It is starting to crowd out the irises but I want to keep it. Can it be transplanted and when is a good time to do it?

Why isn't my Serviceberry producing more fruit? #752288

In a given cluster, only about half the flowers are producing fruit. The rest are dry and shriveled. Also, some of the green berries have dark black spots. What causes this and what can I do about it? This Regent Serviceberry was planted 8/5/2020 by a professional landscaper. I picked off a few Japanese Beetles 8/13/2020, and did not see any more after that. Thanks very much

Disease, Pest or Something Else? #752285

Can you help identify whats wrong with this Pinus Contorta 'Spaan's Dwarf'? The plant has been growing in this location for about 4 years. The site faces east and is in shade most of the afternoon. There is a drip irrigation hose that is used during dry spells. soils are clay/silt/loam glacial till that is slightly alkaline.

This is more of an observation from this location (Spring 2021.) There is an unusual robin seen here which has nearly a complete head of white feathers. Perhaps someone in wildlife has received a similar report, certainly this is the first one I've seen. FYI.

Can I spray a service berry with BioAdvanced Fruit, Citrus, and Vegetable Insect Control measures 32-ounces and treats up to 640 square feet. Active Ingredients: 0.235% Imidacloprid. EPA Registration Number: 92564-46. while it has fruit and birds are eating, it looks like the degrees of growth for lecanium they’ll be hatching at same time as berries are out. I’m thinking wait for the berries to be gone? It’s first year we’ve seen on this shrub. Neighborhood is thick with it, our township doesn’t monitor their sick and dead trees so it spreads.

Tomato Blight #752272

I just got my tomato plants in the ground. It rained a number of times and I have not yet been able to protect the leaves, or mulch to prevent dirt from splattering on them. In the meantime, would it help if I brush the dirt off the leaves as much as possible each time after it rains to help prevent Blight? This year I plan on putting organic mushrooms around the plants to help prevent dirt splattering, but I have just not gotten it done yet. I tend to get Blight quite badly every year. Attached are a couple of progression photos. By the end of the season, after cutting off and properly discarding all the damaged leaves, there isn't much of a plant left! Thank you for your insight.

I planted Cheery Belle Radishes from seed the last week of April and they came up very well. However, when I thinned them out yesterday (5/25/2021) I noticed the leaves have tiny holes all over them. I didn't see any bugs on the leaves and the holes appeared overnight! What can I use to help with this problem?

magnolia bush #752254

We recently planted two magnolia bushes in Mont Belvieu,TX. One is doing great the other not. It puts out new leaves but when they unfurled, the point end of the leaf and half way back is totally black. The close end of the leaf is perfect. Then it dies and falls off. We've been careful to water it every other day, the same with the other plant that is healthy and thriving in the same soil. Any ideas?

Tree looked healthy one month ago. Now leaves are rapidly falling. The tree is 50 years old and at least 50 feet tall. It’s usually beautiful at this point I came home to find the yard full of leaves. I have a second matching magnolia about 30 feet away from this one. Need to know if there’s anything we can doTo save it.

Hello, I am trying to choose the correct Evergreen tree for my yard. I am wanting a tree that will grow at least 20ft tall and 15ft wide. I am trying to create fairly large screen that will block a road that sits about 4ft above my property and a building across this road. I am not interested in Pines since they lose foliage at the bottom as they grow. The trees would get early full sun until about noon. Then they would be in partial shade to full shad in late afternoon. I was interested in the "Fat Albert Blue spruce but then I see on your website that they are no longer recommended for our climate here in Minnesota. So I heard about Concolor as an alternative to the Blue Spruce? I am open to other trees as well but prefer something close to the Blue spruce as much as possible. Also I do not care for Evergreens that shed a lot of needles. I am looking at purchasing about 5-6 mature trees to help create this screen and since this will be a large investment I appreciate any advice in choosing the appropriate trees. Thank you!

I have wild daisy's that grow in my yard - the plants don't make leaves - they make the center of the flower, but devoid of leaves. Is this a disease? Should I remove them? Is it dangerous? Is it going to spread to other plants?

Green worms and ferns #752224

My outdoor ferns come back every year without fail. But for year the first time in the 19 years I have been here, the fronds have been devoured. When I looked closer, I did see some inch long green worms. Could that be what is eating the ferns? What are they and how can I get rid of them? Should I just cut back the ferns for the year?

Lapins cherry tree disease #752214

I noticed the deformed leaves on this Lapins cherry yesterday. I purchased this tree frin the Oceana Conservation District this Spring. I did not see any aphids but noticed a few ants which seems to indicate their possible presence. I also noticed the small red nodules on the petioles which I thought unusual and so scraped them off. This is my 3rd year with raised garden beds and I am having a hard time learning about the "perfect soil recipe" The first year I used a combo of 3 parts compost, 1 part peat moss, 1 part vermiculite. The 2nd year I barely harvested anything, I did nothing to the soil, I did not add any. So this year I am emptying the beds and starting over. But it is costly and the soil that I am dumping looks so healthy its hard to believe the nutrients are gone. Do you have a more cost efficient method for the soil in raised garden beds.
