Poison Hemlock in County Park #752264

Asked May 26, 2021, 12:12 PM EDT

Hi, I found what I believe is poison hemlock in a county park. Should I report it to be removed? I attached a photo of the plant that is about 4 feet tall.

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

I think it depends on which county and where the park is.  Where is the park?

Here are several plants that look like poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) https://www.fws.gov/midwest/news/PlantsToAvoid.html

Some information from Michigan State U on poison hemlock:

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.  It is in Montgomery County at the entrance to Georgian Forest Park on the Rippling Brook Dr side.

I suppose it could be Cow Parsnip, but the stems did not look hairy to me.

Thanks,
Kate

I finally was able to speak with someone at MNCPPC who told me they do not have the resources to remove toxic plants from park property.  Just be careful and avoid the plant.
