Why isn't my Serviceberry producing more fruit? #752288

Asked May 26, 2021, 1:28 PM EDT

In a given cluster, only about half the flowers are producing fruit. The rest are dry and shriveled. Also, some of the green berries have dark black spots. What causes this and what can I do about it? This Regent Serviceberry was planted 8/5/2020 by a professional landscaper. I picked off a few Japanese Beetles 8/13/2020, and did not see any more after that. Thanks very much

Expert Response

Note: My landscaper fertilized the Serviceberry last month. They injected liquid fertilizer at the root level. They recommend this once a year. I am not sure if it is necessary to fertilize shrubs or if the fertilization had any effect on the fruiting. What is your opinion?

Thanks again for your help

Serviceberry shrubs/trees can take 2-3 years to establish good fruit. With the late planting last year it is likely you will not see consistent fruit for awhile. Regular moisture is important for the plant this year.

Typically with good soils fertilization of Serviceberry trees/shrubs is not needed. The best way to know what should/should not be added to the soil is to have a soil test done.
