Thank you for telling people reading the "Garden Q&A" column in the Annapolis Capital on March 30th that tent caterpillars are native moths that won't hurt your tree and that songbirds and several types of wasps need these caterpillars for food. That is the type of information that is so important in these days of dwindling bird and insect populations. Thank you for speaking up for our native ecosystem!

Help! White larvae falling from Doug Fir branch #863158

Hi! I live in Portland and have a big healthy dog fir tree in my backyard. There is a large branch that hangs over my patio and over the past few days white larva have started falling from it. I don’t know how serious the problem is or what kind of insect they are, but there are hundreds alljj be over my deck! An arborist said the tree looks healthy last month, but I’m wondering if you can help me identify these and advise? Thank you!

We believe we have a white pine weevil infestation. Our white pine has a die-off in the topmost branches (yellowing) and clusters of sap. The blackhill spruce has a classic 'shepherds crook' on the leader. Can we hire someone from the Extension for diagnosis and possible treatment?

I have two categories of fig tree questions (pruning and insect damage) because for many years we have had no figs, just an overpowering fig tree that grows some 10 to 12 feet. I have attached a pdf with photos. (A) On Pruning & Maintaining Height: I have three questions after reviewing the Extension Service guidance on "growing figs in Maryland:" https://extension.umd.edu/resource/growing-figs-maryland/ 1. Number of Leaders: How many leaders should be left to grow? In the photo you can see numerous leaders. Perhaps too many. 2. Pruning the Fig Tree: During the growing season, can I safely continue to cut the leaders back to 5 feet? Last fall we cut the leaders down from well of 10 to 12 feet back to just over 5 feet. If I don’t, cut them in the summer, they will grow up to over10 feet. I am trying to create a bush shape. 3. How Much to Prune: If the leaders grow beyond 4 to 5 feet, is it safe to keep pruning back by cutting up to 1/3 to ½ of the leader (B) On Possible Insect damage. See the two photos: 1. Could there be some kind of a worm infestation in the live leader? We could see a very tiny and thin white worm. 2. Could there be a more systematic insect infestation in the dead leader?

What insect is this? They appear on Terra cotta saucer. Sansaveria hannia propagated by root division and planted in new Terra cottage pots w/succulent catus mix from commercial bag mix. I wash off saucer and use neem oil, then they reaapear. Picture uploaded.

Magnolia scale - management plan #863050

Hello-- I have magnolia scale on my Star Dwarf Magnolia tree in my yard in Minneapolis. I only have one magnolia tree. I started managing it in the fall. It started with fuzzy white bugs, then paper wasps were attracted to the sap, now it's the remnants of red-brown armored scale, I think. I have read in the fall, when temps fall, to spray the tree thoroughly with water to remove as many pests manually as possible. Then do 3-4 weekly applications of horticultural oil (I'm using dilute Neem) followed by an application or two of Insecticidal soap. Then I the spring before bud swell to do horticultural oil again. That's what I did. Is this accurate? Is there any advantage to doing insecticidal soap in the spring also? Am I missing any steps? Thank you!!

Something is eating my Napa cabbage, I think at night. The plants are covered with crop floating cover, I don’t see a slime trail, I have beer traps but no slugs. There are multiple ground spider webs.

Pest problem with Meyer Lemon plant #862959

I have a Meyer Lemon plant for 5+ years. Each winter, there is an infestation that is getting worse. It appears to be powdery mildew but also might be another problem too with black and yellow spots. In November, I bring the plant inside. Starting in ~December, leaves start to fall. By April, almost all leaves have fallen. I bring the plant outside, and the leaves return, but all buds drop. And I get no fruit (last year) or just 1-2 lemons in other years. It now has very few leaves, and most of the leaves appear damaged. What can I do? I tried weekly spraying with Captain Jack's Copper fungicide and Immunox. It seems hopeless. I am wondering if I should just get rid of the plant. Please advise.

I overwintered some potted peppers in my basement and subsequently ended up overwintering some pests, too. These bugs are getting onto my vegetable garden seedlings and I'd like to know if I can leave them be or is i need to be aggressive in trying to remove them. I'm picking them off as I see them for the time being. Take a look at the picture and let me know what you think. Kale cotyledon is what they're on the underside of in the picture. Thanks!

I planted 3 Parriotia fall 2022. One of them has developed bark damage that I am unable to identify and treat. It appears as if an insect is eating the underlayer of the bark, or a fungus, but unable to figure this out. The damage is into the cambium layer on the trunk creating large sores. This one tree of 3 is also growing shoots along the trunk the others are not. I can find no insect infestation except for a few small spiders making nests in the damaged areas. The tree appears healthy otherwise as it is leafing out.

I have tried digging this plant out for years but with its many bulblets and fine roots, eradicating it has been impossible. We do not use chemicals and other than digging out the clumps or putting the dug-up soil through a sifter, I wonder what you might be able to suggest. In good years I try to ignore it and mow it low, but am disheartened that it keeps coming up. Thankyou! (And the same goes for Lesser Celandine!)
