Parrotia persica Vanessa suffering from infestation or? #862871

Asked March 30, 2024, 2:48 PM EDT

I planted 3 Parriotia fall 2022. One of them has developed bark damage that I am unable to identify and treat. It appears as if an insect is eating the underlayer of the bark, or a fungus, but unable to figure this out. The damage is into the cambium layer on the trunk creating large sores. This one tree of 3 is also growing shoots along the trunk the others are not. I can find no insect infestation except for a few small spiders making nests in the damaged areas. The tree appears healthy otherwise as it is leafing out.

Expert Response

I wanted to add that I’m noticing how the new areas are seeming to pop out of what look like swellings in the outer layers of the bark. And possibly moving up the tree.

Cankers are dead sections of bark on branches or
main trunks of trees. Bark may be killed by
mechanical injuries or by plant pathogens, especially fungi and bacteria. Most plant pathogens are unable to penetrate bark directly but will quickly colonize wounded tissue. Canker diseases may cause extensive damage to trees when they kill all of the bark in a particular area, thus girdling a branch or main stem.  Girdling results in death of all parts of the plant above the canker. If the trunk is affected, the entire plant may die. The swelling and then bursting may point to Anthracnose. Any damage to the trunk by ties, animals, abrasion can open the tree to disease. Parrottia is very disease resistant as a rule.
