Japanese Beetle Infestation #863113

Asked April 02, 2024, 11:09 AM EDT

We have an issue with japanese beetle on a creeping vine on our fence. The vine spans about 75 yards. Who can we get to professionally address this infestation?

Expert Response

Thanks for contacting us about Japanese beetles. They’ve spread to many areas of the Front Range and are here to stay. There are ways to manage them, and those details are in the fact sheet https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/japanese-beetle-5-601/
Because the adult beetles are very mobile, they can fly from yard to yard continuing the damage, and controlling them in our own yard may not do much good.

There are ways to treat this insect at different life stages; as an immature grub living in the lawn before it becomes an adult, and as the adult. Both life stages cause damage, but the most effective control is to treat the grub (larva) before they pupate and become adults.

The fact sheet (above) lists treatment options and timing to do it yourself. Lawn care companies offer these services. We do not offer treatment services, nor do we recommend specific companies.

There are some plants that Japanese beetles are particularly fond of. See the list included in the fact sheet and note that Virginia creeper (perhaps the vine in your yard?) is at the top of the list. Finding alternative plants is a another option to control insect populations.

Thanks again,

Karin
