Potential white pine weevil infestation #863125

Asked April 02, 2024, 12:18 PM EDT

We believe we have a white pine weevil infestation. Our white pine has a die-off in the topmost branches (yellowing) and clusters of sap. The blackhill spruce has a classic 'shepherds crook' on the leader. Can we hire someone from the Extension for diagnosis and possible treatment?

The Black Hills spruce does have what looks like white pine weevil damage. We do not offer treatment services or home visits, but this resource will give you information on simple control measures:

The white pine appears to have some kind of canker. I will pass this along to another specialist who may be able to better assist with the pine.

Hello, I agree with previous answer.  I do not think WPW is causing issue on the white pine. From the picture provided I'm having trouble pinpointing what is. My advise would be to  keep an eye on it through the spring. See if that tree/canker has more symptoms (sporulation), if it is a canker, I would need additional pictures when more active signs/symptoms in spring (orange-yellow spores, etc.) to diagnosis.
