I have a client who needs a replacement Freelance gardener beginning spring of 2024. I am "hanging up" my pruners at the completion of this season after working 15 yrs on this beautiful property and wonderful client! Location is in the Dellwood area, I worked 1 day per week, approximately 7 hr day. She is willing to work out a schedule that will work for you. major damage from insects on smoke tree #848667

Hello. Thanks in advance for helping with this. This is about an infestation of a Royal Purple Smoke Tree, with possibly two types of insects. I was gone 1 week and returned home a week ago to find that insects had suddenly and significantly damaged the tree, which had been healthy. The leaves have the stained-glass effect as they're eaten. (Photos are attached -- zoom in.) The insects look similar to a striped black slug, but I don't think it's a sawfly -- It's been two weeks and no winged insects have appeared. And it's been dry. Yesterday I also found tiny tiny black spiders and a symmetrical bundle of white eggs. Also, during these 2 weeks, many leaves have tiny pieces of black debris on them, as though someone sprinkled bits of charcoal embers. Those bits also fall to the ground and look like black dirt. I've heard that trees can recover from this type of damage, but I'm concerned this one won't. Can someone help me identify what the infestation is, and what to do? I hope to avoid pesticides if possible. Thanks again.

Hi, I teach Horticulture at MVU high school. I would like to have my class plan a 3ft by 40ft 10inch deep raised bed of Tupis and muscari in the school colors alongside the outside of our greenhouse, I am concerned that having bulbs in raised beds might not be enough winter protection for them. What do you think?

Pecan tree #848504

We have a pecan tree that makes huge pecans but usually not many. They are normally very dry and not good to eat. This year the tree has a ton of pecans but by the time they have turned brown and fallen they are black and oily on the inside. We had another tree next to it that had beautiful pecans but the tree died a few years ago. The gentleman we bought our house from had both these trees grafted to make good pecans. Can someone come look at the tree and tell us what we need to do? I do not want it to die as the other one did.

Wood Chips in Vegetable Garden #848499

Good morning. I’m in the process of rehabilitating a fairly large vegetable garden for a non profit. The garden paths are muddy and weedy. I’d like to put wood chips on the paths. The city provides free wood chips to residents which would be a big help to the budget. Would there be any kind of disease issues using wood chips in a vegetable garden on the paths only? The wood chips would not be placed on any vegetable beds. The garden is in Wayne county but I live in and took the master gardener class in Oakland county. Thank you for any assistance.

There seems to be a large number of wasps living in the roof of my front porch. I don't mind them, but I have heard they cause problems for bees. Should I ignore them or kill them? Thanks for all you do. Tom

Have a 20(ish) 30ft+ tall Engleman Spruce (White Pine) in ft yard noticing a spiral browning frog ground up 1 or 2 layers into the tree branches above / below the spiraling loop seem to be unaffected cost to come out look at (Diagnose) “Treat” Wadsworth-Jewell (Lakewood CO Area) HAVE 4 pix not really descriptive but may help but appear to be TOO BIG to attach here do not know how to reduce individual file sizes e-mail me and I can send them Thx Thx

Drooping crepe myrtle and panicle hydrangea #848284

I have a well-established and apparently healthy crepe myrtle and a three-year old panicle hydrangea. Both started out the summer growing vigorously and looking beautiful. By mid-August both plants were beginning to bloom. The plants are not near each other and the only similarity is that both were pruned fairly lightly last Winter. All was well and the blossoms were numerous and huge by late August. So huge, in fact, that the branches were beginning to droop badly. Then yesterday's rain weighed the branches down so the hydrangea blossoms are actually on the ground and the crepe myrtle branches are breaking. Is this normal or the result of the light pruning or something else? What can I do to strengthen the branches in the future? What should I do right now to save these beautiful plants?

I'm looking for plants that can tolerate black walnuts. There is a lot of conflicting information online. Specifically the following: Ginkgo biloba Viburnum rhytidophyllum Cattail reeds Amsonia hubrichtii Cedrus deodara Fothergilla spp. Eragrostis spectabilis Nassella tennuissima Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' Perovskia atriplicifolia Also, what is the radius for juglone from a black walnut tree? I've read anywhere from 40 to100 feet. That's a huge swing and I'd like to get a better idea. Thank you!

Why are my hydrangea leaves suddenly turning brown? I didn’t have flowers this year because a late freeze almost killed them and they had to start over. But they grew almost 3 ft tall and have been looking good until recently.

My pine trees are dying. I am not sure the type of pine they are, but it appears as though they are dying from the bottom spreading upward and the tree starts dying close to the trunk and then spreading outward. I have already had to remove a couple trees, but I would like to save the rest if possible

How to keep pumpkins until fall #847924

Hi, In the past I've had some sort of grub/larva get into the base of my pumpkin vines and within a few days the vines shrivel an disappear. This year I applied Sevin dust shortly after they seeds sprouted and had decent luck and have mature orange pumpkins. But now the stems are disappearing (not dying off like they normally would after frost, but practically disappearing they shrivel up so much). They've been kept watered, so it looks like something has gotten to the stems again. Two questions: 1. What's the best way to prevent these stem wreckers? 2. What's the best way to keep the pumpkins fresh/intact until my nieces and nephews come for them in October? :-) Thanks!

Dying trees #847609

Hello, I've got some older trees in my back yard (25yr). I planted a couple pecans in line with them 4yr ago, bought and planted by a professional nursery. 2 yes after planting, the pine nearest them got sick and started dying. The next year the closest of the young pecans started dying. I hoped it was stress from the strong ice storm we had. The next year the other pecan died and this year another pine in the line of trees is dying. I've attached a picture of the tree line and it shows how the proximal ends of the pine needle bundles are brown while the distal are still green. The pecans just died off quickly. Any suggestions. There are many treesin the area and I don't want this to move into my neighbors yard. I do drain a pool into my yard surely stressing everything but I stopped exhausting it near the treesthe year they started getting sick.
