Type of hornet? #848610

Asked September 04, 2023, 9:42 PM EDT

I am a building supervisor at an elementary school in Carroll county and while cleaning out ceiling lights I found this giant looking hornet in one of the lights. I was not sure if this needs to be reported or is a local hornet.

Expert Response

Hi,
Although we cannot see the markings on the back, the fact that you wrote that this insect was both large and found indoors and an examination of the antennae color  matches one of our photos, I would surmise that this is a European hornet, our largest true hornet in the U.S.  Although frequently found outdoors in tree hollows. this social insect also will build nests in chimneys and walls indoors.  If it was a single insect found, it may have been attracted by lights in the evening. They often find their way inside homes at night if a light is left on.
It is not native but it is well established in the US since 1850's, so no need to report.
