Barrier and security plants #859096

I'm looking for recommendations for plants and shrubs to deter people and animals from walking between two buildings on my property. This is a (currently grassy) area about 5 feet wide by 15 feet long. I'm hoping for some sort of barrier plant or something with thorns that will be difficult or impossible to walk through or around, won't immediately overwhelm the buildings on either side, and is available locally. This summer we notice a black discoloration to the trunk of the decorative crepe myrtle trees in the front of our home (see photos). This has been a re-occuring annual event however the discoloration is more pronounced this year. What steps should we be taking to protect the trees?

I am putting fill around a large western red cedar and am wondering if that will harm the tree. We are on the coast where it is hard to kill plants but I have the uphill side under up to 2 feet of fill and would like to put up to 14 inches up 10 feet out on the downhill side.

Turf removal and pollinator garden #858820

Do you still do home visits? I had one when I moved into my house in 2016 and it was very helpful in identifying numerous areas that need attention. I am contemplating taking out about 400 sq ft of turf along a section of Blue Spruce. The mature trees have roots invading the lawn and affecting the grass. Rather than remove the trees, I'm thinking of removing a section of turf, adding some new soll, and planting native plants that attract pollinators. I'd like to see if any of the master gardeners have suggestions as to whether this would be the best solution. Thank you.

How do I contact Julie Weisenhorn, Extension horticulture educator? I have been impressed with her tree & shrub articles. I have to replace 2 rows of 14 Ash trees each 20 ft apart that border our “football” field. I’d like to use medium height fruit and/or pollinator trees that have specifically been released from the U of MN. The site is at the bottom of a north facing deep hill so is usually slightly cooler & damper than the area norm. Soil is sandy loam. Best mulch for garden pathway #858738

My mother’s garden consists of a large plot with raised mounds that she plants vegetables in. The pathways between them have become increasingly covered in weeds over the last few years so I would like to install some sort of mulch to help suppress them. Ideally it would also provide solid footing since she is in her 80s. Is there something you would suggest? I have used landscape fabric in other flower beds with minimal success so don’t really want to go that route. The soil in her area is very sandy.

I work with individuals with disabilities and I assist them with finding opportunities after high school. I currently have one individual who is an AVID horticulturist. He truly knows almost any and everything about plants, trees, flowers, etc... I am in the process of trying to find a place(s) for this individual to either volunteer, work, or receive job training in the Cleveland Area.

I lived in Seattle during WW II and fell in love with California Poppies. It seemed they grew wild but it looks like I can order seeds. These are NOT opium poppies, right? I want to know can I grow them in MD? Planting seeds in Spring.

Hi, we have found symphylans in our garden beds and are wondering if you have any advice on how to deal with them. We used cut potatoes to test for their presence and found many on the surface of them, so it appears to be a pretty heavy infestation. They have especially devastated any brassicas we have tried to grow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
