Hello,
The cicadas appear to be near peak in Sharpsburg, MD. Up close, the cicadas' song sounds like a buzzing, which increases and decreases periodically. However, from a distance, it is more of a whirring sound (like a flying saucer in a 1950s science fiction movie). If I head in the direction of the whirring, I can never get close to it ... just the mass buzzing sound. Is there some kind of acoustic effect where the mass buzzing combines to sound different from a distance?
