Struggling pine trees #754873

Asked June 08, 2021, 4:20 PM EDT

Hi, I live here in Longmont and have 2 pine trees in my back yard that haven’t looked very good the past couple of years. They are pretty thin and one has quite a few dead branches. Do you know of anyone that could come look at them and let me know if they’re dying or if there is something I can do to help them. I really don’t want to lose these trees. Thank you for your time. Expert Response

Good Morning, Kathy --

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with some pine trees! We do have a tree team, though unfortunately right now they are not conducting in person visits (which they normally do). However, you can email them directly by sending an email to <personal data hidden> and putting "For Tree Team" in the subject line. I suggest adding a few more photos, including close ups (you can follow this guide https://boulder.extension.colostate.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2021/04/Digital-Photography-for-Plant-Problem-Diagnosis-or-Plant-ID-003.pdf).

Generally, if the dead branches are more towards the bottom of the tree, this may not be cause for a lot of concern. Often, the branches at the bottom of pine trees are not receiving as much light/sun as those at the top and thus naturally die off. If you go hiking, take a look at the pine trees and you'll notice that most of the lower parts of the trees are missing branches, particularly as they get taller.

With more photos, I'm sure the tree team will be able to help!

Kindly,

Jasmine
