Gladstone Michigan area Maple Tree Disease or Insect Damage #865776

Hello there. We live in Gladstone Michigan, which is on the west North corner of Lake Michigan. I believe it to be Zone 5 or 5A. We are on a 0.8 Acre moderately wooded residential lot. The mix of species is mostly oak and Maple. There are presently two sets of medium aged to mature maple trees with what appears to be the same disease, or pests. One set died over a 1.5 to 2 year period, and the other appears to have the same problem. Wood peckers are feeding on something in the bark, but all I can find is a small green worm, and only two of those. I am attaching several jpegs, in hopes they could you help identify the issue so we can react accordingly. As an example, when I cut them down can we use the fire wood or should I get it off the property all together. Plus,... are we subject to spread to other maples on the lot.??? Best regards... Karl

Why are crape myrtles restricted from import into Oregon? #865739

I would love to plant a crape myrtle in my yard. But "Fast Growing Trees" (they have a lot of them) cannot sell to Oregon due to agricultural restrictions. Why is this? Are we worried about the import of a disease? What disease?

Live in Harford County, MD. and for 2 years have had a grub infestation. Can I reseed in the Spring and spray for the grubs in early June? My lawn service told me not to spray for the grubs until June.

Big leaf maple #865679

My big leaf maple wilted suddenly last week. When I went out to inspect it, I saw that the bark around the base of the tree was flaking off, girdling the tree. I would so appreciate any thoughts about what may have caused this. I'm sad to lose this tree, which was blooming beautifully and seemingly in excellent health the day before. I'm also wondering if the problem with the bark should impact the tree I choose to replace it, or if there's anything I should consider to protect other trees in the yard.

Hello, I live in Hartland Michigan and within an oak forest.  We have red, white and Black oaks, among other species.  Regarding our interest in avoiding Oak Wilt, we are not so far aware if any of our trees are infected.  If we want to remove some entire trees, is it advisable and or ok to remove the entire tree during this time of year.   Thank you.

Why is my pin oak tree dying? #865550

We have noticed that one of our two pin oak trees is losing its leaves on the inside; and all inside branches are now bare. Outside branches have some new leaves but far fewer than it used to have when it was healthy. We noticed this last year but it’s worse this year. I don’t see any visible insects on the branches or trunk, which is approx 10 feet around at the base. It’s about 40 feet tall. I do see some splitting and green “moss” and fungus and other stuff on some of the branches. Please see my photos. The tree is about 28 years old. It’s planted in rich soil that used to be agricultural (growing soybeans and maybe corn), then turned into a small subdivision in southern Anne Arundel County (Harwood, MD). We had an older maple tree die a few years ago (located about 200 feet away from this tree). Someone told me they thought it was possibly anthracnose. Do you have any idea what is happening and how we can save this tree? I have many more photos I can send. Thanks so much in advance.

Hello, this past week I've seen about 7 of these insects in my study. I never have food or drink in this room, and haven't seen them in any other room. The one in the photo is not quite half and inch long, some of the others are smaller. I live in SW Portland, if that helps. Thanks for any info you can give me, Nanette Klimkow

Dying wax myrtle #865504

Thank you for your help! I’ve recently noticed that my wax myrtle is not very green & leaves are dead on the tree- it’s been with us a long time, so looks like a tree. A quick glance online mentioned a potential problem could be a foliar fungus. I plucked a green leaf off & noticed red speckles all over it top & bottom. Any advice would help me in my next steps.

Hi There,

We have property in Cripple Creek, CO. and found a dense silky white web in the top of our Douglas Fir.   The tip of the tree is totally brown, and with binoculars I have spotted caterpillars on the outside of the web.  I can't identify the caterpillar markings from where I'm at.  I'm attaching a picture.  We are trying to determine if it is a Tiger Moth or another species and if so, what needs to be done so it does not spread to the surrounding forest we own.  If this is not the office to direct this question to and you know of the correct location, can you please let me know?  Thank you so much!

Woodpecker problems #865393

Good morning we have a lake home south of Detroit Lakes along the Pelican River. We are having trouble with wood peckers in our trees that are only about 3-4 years old. We have tried everything and are worried that they are going to damage our trees. Do you have any advice for us??? There are several places in our park that are having the same issues. Hi Emily. I just read your article about cherry laurel problems. The first thing all of you need to tell homeowners the names of native plants that would be good replacements. You could explain that native plants are adapted to the region where they are grown so they are naturally more resistant to diseases. Many are deer resistant. Thanks for considering this request. Bark Borers? #865362

I had to remove two evergreen trees from my property this week that were completely dead. I could hear loud wood chewing sounds coming from the trunks, so I peeled back some of the bark and saw what I believe to be some kind of bark beetle or borer. I can hear similar chewing sounds, less active, coming from a mostly live tree near where the others died. Is there anything to be done to save trees from these bugs? Or once they are in the bole is there no choice but to count them as good as dead, cut them down, and burn as quick as possible like the others? Photos attached.

Sweetgum Tree in Crisis? #865359

Attached are photos of a 30 year old sweetgum tree that grew on its own in our yard before we realized what it was and the nuisance the gum balls are that drop every fall/winter. Nevertheless, it is a nicely shaped tree and provides summer shade. Last year we noticed some branches high on the crown were de-leafed. We attributed it to leaf-eating caterpillars. This year, as the tree leafs-out, we are noticing several branches near the top appear dead. Can you tell if the tree is dying, experiencing stress from climate change or is this a natural occurrence for this type of tree? It gets plenty of water and sunlight.

What are the most deer resistant shrubs to plant for a privacy hedge? #865357

Hello, I was wondering if the extension office has ever answered a similar question or has a list of the best evergreen trees or shrubs to plant for a privacy hedge. When researching online, there’s a lot of conflicting information about what trees and shrubs are actually deer resistant. Many websites will claim that eastern red cedars are deer resistant, while on other websites, people will claim that it’s actually western red cedars that are the most deer resistant. I’ve seen arborvitae’s of both varieties sustain deer damage. Do you know if any junipers varieties are more deer resistant? Thank you for any tips or information! -Ashley
