Hello, I bought property up near Cheboygan. It was cleared long ago for lumber and for about 150 years+ has not been touched. There is a apple tree on the property and I am having trouble identifying the type of apple tree it is. I have attached photos to help. I can also provide an actual apple or it's seeds if needed.

I would like some information on the effect of juglone fromfruits and black walnut trees and their effect on plants located adjacent to the trees. I have looked on line and found some conflicting information. There appears to be some concensuous that Juglone originating from black walnut trees (Leaves, friuts and roots). adversly affect adjacently located trees and bushes, In particular, apples are mentioend to be particulary sensitive, but there are others as well. I have also seen refernces that this a legend, based on hearsay and never confirmed by a serious, well researched study. Can you please comment on this and direct me to some research on this topic?

I have discovered jumping worms in the soil,while preparing the garlic bed to plant for next year. What can I do? info on line says use tea tree meal to get the worms to rise and then kill them. But what happens to their eggs? Considering the weather, this year's garlic crop seems OK, But if I plant the bulbs now will the worms damage the soil structure and use up the rest of the nutrients n the bed? Also, since we have seen them in the grass and in other vegetable beds, what can be done on a larger scale to rid my (1/2acre) yard of the worms? -Sutton, VT .

I have over 300 acres of CRP in Guthrie County, between Coon Rapids and Perry. Invasive trees are a problem for contract renewal. When is the best time to spray them in the fall? Is it too late? The leaves on the willows are 80% green with about 20% turning yellow. I have been using products such as Crossbow, Remedy and Garlon 4.These are used along with crop oil and wetting agent. The main ingredients are trichlopyr and 2-4D. Would you suggest anything different? What range of temperatures are the best for spraying? When does it become too late in the fall to spray? Are these cool days around 55 degrees bad days to spray. In the wetter areas there is a real problem with mainly willows and some cottonwoods. The problem is literally 1000s of them. Thank you. Bill

My Forest Pansy redbud tree has curling leaves. The Eastern redbuds are doing well. The forest pansy redbud is about 12 feet tall and has been in my yard without problem for 7 years. There are no mites or other insects that I can see and no mold. The bark is intact and it seems to have the correct amount of water. It has done well all summer andjust started to look very bad. Dear Horticulture staff, will you please help identify? The neglected pots badly needed water after my aunt passed. Once watered the vine type grew with little purple flowers. The other concrete pot foliage was partly rust colored - now green and bushy once watered. Thanks, Nicole

Teeny, tiny bugs coming through window screens #852155

Hello - every fall I go to war with the box elder bugs and at least I know what I am dealing with. Last year and this year, something new is going on and I don't know what to do about it and hope that you can provide some guidance. When I open my windows, the screens are covered with these teeny, tiny black (I think) bugs that then come right through the screens in a cloud of bugs. Right now, the only thing I can do is keep my windows and patio door closed. I'd really like to let some fresh air in but cannot deal with the cloud of bugs. 1) Do you happen to know what these are? 2) Do you know how to get rid of them? 3) Any suggestions? East Side of Binghamton #852115

I've lived on the east side of Binghamton for 1 year now. I'm having difficulty growing grass, especially in the back yard. The back yard is mostly shaded, and has moss mixed in with mud and sparsely spaced clumps of grass currently. The ground appears to have been dug t of the mountain in shelves, then covered with about 6 inches of dirt. I can not dig any further down than 6 inches. We even tried a Milwaukee V28H Rotary Hammer Drill. The drill bit actually got stuck in the shelf the house was built on, and we can't get it out. When it rains we have large puddles that form, and take a day or two to soak in. My current question is how to grow grass in the very shaded area of my back yard with the small amount of dirt available there. I'm currently getting the soil tested. Please suggest a type of grass as well.

Our maple trees, mature and young #851825

Hoping to get a response; wrote some days back, same issues. Our mature Crimson King (we think) maple in our front yard has developed dark areas on trunk, like the bark is cracking open in spots, will include photos of the tree and trunk. They appear to be weeping somewhat. Tree looks healthy otherwise, no evidence of bugs or anything else. But last summer/fall our city replaced our road and water mains, not sure if there's a connection. Other issue is the maple we planted last fall in place of the sister of our mature maple, other side of the driveway. We had to cut that one down as it was strangling itself with a girdling root. The new maple is over 7 feet tall, looking healthy, but it's not branching. The leaves seem to be all sprouting from the main stem, from bottom to top. Should we prune the bottom or ? Please we hope to get a response. We are esp. concerned about our mature maple tree. Thank you so much.

onions didn't grow this year #851672

We did a soil sample in a garden bed at the end of March, in the results N was low but everything else was high. The ph was 6.32, in the optimal range. Before planting onions, I applied a fertilizer with mostly N. I planted 2 types of onions in the bed, a transpant onion set and a bulb onion set. The watering was consistent with soaker hoses, the same as other years, but the onions were not growing, after an initial 2-3 inches of growth. since there was enough space, I planted some lettuce in the same bed, it grew fine. Some volunteer oregano started growing, as well as yarrow and other weeds, which I pulled. Towards the end of July, seeing that nothing much had happened since the beginning of May, I added some inorganic fertilizer, ammonium sulphate, thinking that maybe it would be a fast N push to help out, just in case lack of N was the problem, even though I doughted it. Nothing. Here we are at the end of September and the biggest onion is maybe an inch in diameter. This is very strange, never happened to me. What do you think?

Last year I heard quite a bit about jumping worms, and read an article in the MN Horticulture magazine. I did not find any in my garden. However this year, I found a large number of what I believe are jumping worms. I live on a large shaded lot near Lake Minnetonka. I think the worms have eaten some of my hosts roots. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of these worms. Thank you for any help you can give me.

I have numerous clumps of grass growing in my front yard. The clumps are about 6 to 8 inches high. and 3 to 6 inches wide. The grass leaf is very thin, like 1/16 of inch  wide.  Leaf shiny on the outside and little  rough to touch on inside. The leafs are bent in half the long way. I pulled out one clump  and pulled up large amount of attached dirt. I recently reseeded front yard with blue gramma and buffalo grass. Unsure where clumps came from. I would like to know best way to get rid of the clumped grasses.
