East Side of Binghamton #852115

Asked October 04, 2023, 9:22 AM EDT

I've lived on the east side of Binghamton for 1 year now. I'm having difficulty growing grass, especially in the back yard. The back yard is mostly shaded, and has moss mixed in with mud and sparsely spaced clumps of grass currently. The ground appears to have been dug t of the mountain in shelves, then covered with about 6 inches of dirt. I can not dig any further down than 6 inches. We even tried a Milwaukee V28H Rotary Hammer Drill. The drill bit actually got stuck in the shelf the house was built on, and we can't get it out. When it rains we have large puddles that form, and take a day or two to soak in. My current question is how to grow grass in the very shaded area of my back yard with the small amount of dirt available there. I'm currently getting the soil tested. Please suggest a type of grass as well.

Expert Response

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your inquiry.  This is a difficult situation to try to grow turf grass.  Grass is a full sun plant for the most part.  There are species, fine fescues, that will tolerate more shade but they are often delicate and don't hold up to foot traffic well.  Grass also doesn't compete well with tree roots.  You will need to ask yourself how will you be using this space and does it need to be lawn?  Could another shade tolerant ground cover work here?

The space appears to be heavily compacted and acidic so moss and some weeds have taken over.

Here are some good resources to help you make an informed decision about what to do and what to plant: https://turf.cals.cornell.edu/lawn/lawn-care-the-easiest-steps-to-an-attractive-environmental-asset/

So when I see advertisements like above, I should ignore the "full shade" claim?

Yes, I would be skeptical of that.  It may grow in shade but may not thrive and fill in the way you want it to.
