type of clump grass in front yard lawn and how to get rid of #851446

I have numerous clumps of grass growing in my front yard. The clumps are about 6 to 8 inches high. and 3 to 6 inches wide. The grass leaf is very thin, like 1/16 of inch  wide.  Leaf shiny on the outside and little  rough to touch on inside. The leafs are bent in half the long way. I pulled out one clump  and pulled up large amount of attached dirt. I recently reseeded front yard with blue gramma and buffalo grass. Unsure where clumps came from. I would like to know best way to get rid of the clumped grasses.

Hello- I am attempting to get an old garden back into shape. We have a huge problem with oxalis in one of our raised beds. I do not want to use chemicals to treat as this is our vegetable garden. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of this annoying weed? Thanks!

Austrian Pine Tree Sap #851294

Our two 30 year old Austrian Pines have thick sap looking blobs and drips.  The blobs are on the trunk and are thick yellowish colored and the drips are whitish yello color.

Is this the signs of the Zimmerman Tree Moth?  How do I treat it?

Hi, I have just found that I have 3 dead apple trees.  I just bought 3 new apple trees to replace them.  can I keep them in the pots (5 gal.) of which they came in over  the winter or is fall a good time to plant them.  the ground is ready for them to be planted if I need to plant them.   please guide me as to what is the best alternative.

Autumn Blaze Maple not turning red #851198

I work for a landscape company in Colorado Springs. We have a past customer (northeast area of Colo Springs) who had an Autumn Blaze Maple installed in their front lawn in the Fall of 2021. The last two autumns the tree’s leaves haven’t been red at all. They’ve been more of an orange ish brown. Is it normal for autumn blaze maples to not turn super bright in the autumn, or might that be because of the weather? I’ve attached a couple pictures of their tree (and a picture of their neighbor’s super red tree) in case that helps.


I've got some possible theories but thought asking the experts would be the responsible way to go.


We did recommend they check with the nursery where the tree came from (Heidrich’s Colorado Tree Farm Nursery) and/or CSU Extension (https://extension.colostate.edu/contact-us/) as they’d have much more first-hand knowledge and experience with their questions.

We recently built a new house on previously wooded lot. We were happy to see an apple tree on our property but the apples are small and have many imperfections but are sweet. I would love to help this tree produce larger, healthier apples in the coming years. Is there anything I can do to make this happen?

Two questions about our maples, one mature and one young #851005

We are so worried about our tree. Our mature maple is getting these dark stained areas up the trunk, so far it seems to be on one side, the north side. It's a big mature tree. Our street was repaved last summer, new water mains, not sure if that was traumatic to our maple. Sending photo of the trunk, close up of one of the problem areas, and of the entire tree. So far, the leaves look ok. A note, there was a sister tree on the other side of the driveway that started to die last year, we believe it was a girdling root. We had to have it cut down and we surely don't want to lose this one. We see no bugs, no sap per se but it looks like the "wounds" or whatever they are are weeping a little. You can see in the close up photo. Also, we planted a new maple last fall where the cut down one was. It is now about 6 feet tall. Leaves sprouted from base to top but nothing seems to be branching out. Should we prune off the bottom leaves and if so, how much and how should we do that. We hope you can help us. We really, really don't want to lose our maple.

I had 250-300 strawberry plants that unfortunately were destroyed by black root rot. I’ve killed them all off and rototill them. The area that I had them I have placed an underground irrigation system so I would prefer to re-plant in same area. However, I’ve read the black root fungus remains in the soil so I don’t think I can. Do you have any recommendations so I could replant in the same area?

Masses of jumping worms (both big and small) found in my COMPOST bin that I have proudly and carefully cared for, for year. SOB, SOB, SOB. Must have come in with bulk mulch purchased this spring. Also, in flower beds. Right now, I am removing (UGH) by hand and drowning. I have a few gardens, and one is right next to the woods. Guess I will have them forever. Almost have a heart attack every time I pick one up. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks for listening.

Good morning, I live in Otsego on Riverwood National golf course and our home backs up to a holding pond that has aggressive sandbar willow trees that have grown extensively over the past couple years. These willows sprout runners underground in excess in our and neighboring yards. Our back yard now has an infestation of insects (according to our lawn fertilizer company) that might be attributed to these willow trees. Is it possible to have a master gardener visit our location to offer their expertise regarding eradicating these trees and also to look at our lawn? We have previously been told that these trees and their runners can damage household foundations. I greatly appreciate any help you can provide to me regarding this subject. Thank you!!

Hello, I'm a University of Minnesota student working on a research project about Minnesota yards and lawns and the potential alternatives. I've found great information on this site. Thank you and your teams very much, I appreciate the work you do. My question is about a statistic from this site https://www.naturalshore.com/turf-lawn-to-prairie/ that references the University of Minnesota Extension saying " the average residential lawn size in Minnesota ranges from 0.15 to 0.25 acres, or 6,500 and 10,890 square feet." I haven't been able to find this statistic on the site and was looking for verification.
