Austrian Pine Tree Sap #851294

Asked September 26, 2023, 1:06 PM EDT

Our two 30 year old Austrian Pines have thick sap looking blobs and drips.  The blobs are on the trunk and are thick yellowish colored and the drips are whitish yello color.

Is this the signs of the Zimmerman Tree Moth?  How do I treat it?

Expert Response

Dear Stan,

Thank you for sending in the two photos showing the oozing sap from your 2 mature Austrian Pines. There are a myriad of free online resources available to the public, based upon research from University Horticulture Departments. One such resource authored by Professor Whitney Cranshaw, the Extension entomologist from Colorado State University, is about damage caused by the Zimmerman Pine Moth
https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/zimmerman-pine-moth-5-591/

The article’s accompanying photos look similar to your photos. The article discusses treatment using 1 of 3 possible agents: Chlorantraniliprole, Bifenthrin or Permethrin.
“Because of the life cycle of Zimmerman pine moth, there are two periods when caterpillars are exposed on the bark and insecticide sprays can be effectively used. One is during the period when eggs are laid and hatching, which may occur over a period of several weeks in late summer. Often a better timing of treatments is in spring, targeting the overwintered caterpillars as they emerge and resume activity, often in mid-late April. Insecticide sprays should be thoroughly applied to cover all surfaces of the bark where the caterpillars may occur. Spray volumes should be sufficient to thoroughly wet the bark to penetrate areas under bark flakes and around wounded areas.“
