I plan on attending an orientation class for the master gardeners program very soon and registering for classes that begin Jan 24 2024. I am wondering if I can volunteer at the extention(Medford, Jackson County)in the meantime to refamiliarize and help to prepare for the coming term. I have previous horticulture training/greenhouse work, and started the master gardener program a few years ago but a disability forced me to drop and I want to restart and complete the program if I can get through it. My previous training was at City College San Francico Horticulture Dept. and it was the best part of my education . I would love to help out in the greenhouse or anywhere else if possible.

Red in Pecans #855361

I'm seeing red stuff in the pecan's membrane-type parts where I've never seen this before when shelling and eating pecans straight from the shell. I'm wondering if it's safe to eat. I've searched the internet for an answer on what this red is to no avail. I'm not expert enough in plant biology to recognize what I'm seeing. I've attached a couple of photos, and hopefully this will help identify whether this burgundy red looking stuff is edible or if it's some kind of mold, rancidity, or fungus. The red stuff is only in the middle and skin parts of the nut, and doesn't seem to be in the meat at all. The red stuff is sort of brittle or dusty. The red is not on the shell, only inside it by the meat.

Kwanzan cherries and Brown rot #855348

We have for years planted Kwanzan cherry trees for Blossoms of Hope in groves. Over the past several years we have noticed brown rot infecting the trees, some to the point we had had to remove them. It seems to advance in the trees each year. We are not interested in applying pesticides as it would be a never ending battle. Are there other options? Are there other flowering cherries showing resistance?

We are specialised in Arborvitea production and want to enfisise the importance of planting harsy trees. Hardy for us mean well structured trees with single leaders that will not open up under heavy snow or ice storms. I am seeking permission to use your article and pictures in our booth. Hi! Is it too late to plant saplings such as elder and saskatoon in Polk County, Iowa? What’s the latest in fall that they should be planted? And in case I need to wait until spring, what’s the best time range in spring to plant them? Is there a way to tell the timing based on the status of other plants, trees, and flowers, since that’s likely to be more accurate to variable temperature contexts than month names? Thank you!

Will bullet galls kill my oak seedling? #854984

I am trying to establish some oaks in our yard and from time to time transplant a squirrel-planted seedling to a suitable site. This fall, I just noticed the seedling pictured has a number of bullet galls on it. Will these harm the little tree, and should I look for a replacement? Thanks for your advice.

College student preparing to microgram on acre of land and also have a restaurant #854957

I just took the PA webinar for the certificate for the Produce Safety alliance class (They said it applies even though I'm in Ohio) I will be a very small "farm" actually more horticulture (fruit/vegetable/herbs) and I want to grow as much as possible myself to cut Cost of Goods to use in menu items. I will need to suppliment no doubt with other reputable growers. The reason I took this course is because I want to have as many things as I can get to show my methods as being reputable and safe along with having a farm safety plan and a voluntary inspection (some farmers markets require this to sell produce through them which will be a possible incremental step working toward my restaurant end goal). However I'm confused because when I follow the flow chart for exempt or exclusion I believe even after getting up and running full scale with just this land I would not be covered by the rule...Did I waste my time getting this? Should I try to be GAP certified? I see a class for $50 and was considering taking it for the above reason (to be reputable and considered safe in practice). I believe no matter how small or big any sales would be if someone was gong to eat my food in any shape way or form I should have standards and have something showing my process in case someone were to become ill etc. Is there any advice you can share or anything recommendations or thoughts on anything I shared? Japanese maple not doing well #854852

The underside and north-facing sections of our several years old Japanese maple no longer leaf out and have brittle branches. We do not see any visible signs of disease, no mold, insects or unusual spots. We consulted several different tree books even those specializing in Japanese maples but none of them cover this issue.

I believe they are in need of pruning and supports but I am looking for some guidance on where to start and what time of year? We bought our first rose bushes this spring and planted them. Now we're wondering what the best suggestions are to prepare them for winter. I Googled it, but got a bunch of conflicting answers from a variety of sources. So, as we're in El Paso County (Colorado Springs, west side, zone 5b), I thought I'd ask local experts. Our two rose bushes are Polyantha/Small Shrub and Zephirine Drouhin, if that helps. Thanks!

We discovered this hard white substance growing in a garden bed, enveloping some ground cover. We have since found it in the lawn. It’s hard and rubbery, maybe like a pencil eraser. Do we need to try to get rid of it, if so, how?

Monarch caterpillar wandered into our house #854641

We had a monarch caterpillar come into our house a few days ago. It was quite cold outside so we put it in a bug habitat with some garden herbs. It now has spun its chrysalis and I am wondering what we can do for it once it emerges. It will certainly just die if we put it outside but I wondered if there are people who raise them year-round here who would like a new friend. Thanks for any information that you might have.
