Help with Apple Trees #854828

Asked November 06, 2023, 4:21 PM EST

The attached images are of young apple trees at my daughters school in Rochester, Mi. I believe they are in need of pruning and supports but I am looking for some guidance on where to start and what time of year? They have been producing fruit but it doesn't look like they have received maintenance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Adrienne,

The primary period for pruning is during dormancy. People who only have a few trees will typically prune in March, though commercial orchards will start as early as January if the weather is cooperating.

The trees do appear to need some staking. The Washtenaw Conservation District has a brief tutorial on staking. Often staking is only done until trees can support themselves, but the ones that have a very strong bend will perform better with continued support.

The trees don't appear to be in poor condition, though some maintenance is necessary. We have a recent article on pruning from our consumer horticulture team. None are scheduled as of yet, but there are often pruning workshops for home growers run by conservation districts (which for you would be the Oakland Conservation District, though they have not run one recently. The Blue Water and Tuscola Conservation Districts each ran one in 2023).
