Monarch caterpillar wandered into our house #854641

Asked November 03, 2023, 2:01 PM EDT

We had a monarch caterpillar come into our house a few days ago. It was quite cold outside so we put it in a bug habitat with some garden herbs. It now has spun its chrysalis and I am wondering what we can do for it once it emerges. It will certainly just die if we put it outside but I wondered if there are people who raise them year-round here who would like a new friend. Thanks for any information that you might have.

Expert Response

Good Morning Scott,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

We are volunteers who answer horticulture questions. I do not have any information on how to raise a butterfly to keep over the winter in Minnesota. It probably would not survive the winter indoors or outdoors.

So sorry,

Thank you so much for the response. No butterfly yet, so it might not matter. I really appreciate your research and wisdom. I LOVE U of M Extension!!!
