The Aleutians, particularly Sand Point for plant suggestions #855347

Asked November 15, 2023, 1:47 PM EST

Hello,I just moved here from High Altitude in Wyoming. I am wanting to plane native plants as far as flowers and such. I am also searching for info on growing in this climate. You are the first place I have started as in Wy you were a great resource for growing gardens. Please refer me or send links of where to start looking. Thank you so much. CMC

Expert Response

Hi Corrine,

One of the first things you are probably already doing is searching the publications we have available online.  These are great resources, as well as our sustainable gardening manual - https://epay.alaska.edu/C21563_ustores/web/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=6589&SINGLESTORE=true

In addition, here is a list of books you may want:
Alaska Gardening Guide
There's a Moose in My Garden
The Alaska Gardener's Handbook

Other online resources:
https://www.alaskamastergardeners.org/
https://itgrowsinalaska.community.uaf.edu/

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick response. Do you, extension office, ever come down this direction or is all your work done in Anchorage/big metropolises?
I was wondering if you have connections here.
Thank you
Corrine

Good Morning Corrine,

We don't have any Extension resources for agriculture/horticulture in the immediate local area, but if you were in need of a site visit related to integrated pest management, there are funds that could support travel to your site to assist during the growing season.  For many of the more remote areas, we often communicate via email and phone to assist.  Much of the time, we are able to use satellite imagery and then photos of the local area shared by email to help trouble shoot issues land owners might have.

Good morning,
Thanks for the answers.
I got ya, it isn’t something you all do. I understand the expenses involved.
Thank you and have a great Friday!
