Where and when can I find classes for beginner gardening?

Expert Response

Dear Katie,

When I googled beginners garden classes, several online sources popped up.  So if you can access online learning, there are several free sources for beginning gardeners. I will include the search link that I used.  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=beginner+gardener+courses+site%3A.edu&ia=web

Specifically this link is for Oregonians.  https://workspace.oregonstate.edu/course/master-gardener-series-vegetable-gardening

Just because it is listed as master gardener doesn’t mean it is so advanced.
And there are You tube  videos.  Just scroll through watching what appeals to you. Again I searched beginner gardener videos on You tube.

Some local nurseries also offer beginner gardener courses.

Then of course is the local library.  The reference librarian can direct you to books meeting your needs —And videos.

I think this is the best place to start.  And it is free after the cost of a library card for you to check out books.
As you become familiar with the horticultural terms, more and more writing and on line courses will make sense to you.  And you will be able to apply the new learned skills to your own garden.

It is a skill that can be learned slowly and reward you quickly.

One last thought Katie,   depending on what County you live in, in Oregon, or another state, go to the ‘OSU’ Extension office.  Most land grant colleges have Extension offices that help the local horticulture and agriculture community. this link will help you find your local extension.

In Eugene it is on 10th St off Jefferson.  Ask about community gardening classes and eventually ask about the Master Gardener course that typically starts in January.  And you can drop in during open hours to ask any gardening questions.
