In 2011, an Autumn Blaze Maple was professionally planted in my west facing front lawn, close to Boulder foothills, where it receives full sunlight year round and adaquate watering late spring - fall. In the last year or so, there has been a change in the bark, starting w vertical cracking surrounding the truck, from the 12” wide base continuing up to a height of approximately 12’. Over this winter, a strip of bark, about 4” wide x 3’ long, has peeled away from the trunk, but hasn’t detached, leaving considerable exposure to the cambium layer beneath. My question: How do I prevent continued cracking and peeling, and should I apply tree wrap to prevent further bark peel?
