Pruning fruit trees #893593

Asked March 04, 2025, 1:19 PM EST

Is it too late to do heavy pruning on my apple and cherry trees? I live in Marcola.

Lane County Oregon

Expert Response

Probably not. You can always remove dead, diseased and weak or crossing wood. Best to leave  the rest for the summer pruning.

Summer pruning?  I thought the heavy stuff was always done in the dormant season.

Perhaps my response was misleading. March is not a good time to do heavy pruning. August is mostly for suckers and watersprouts (branches going straight up and new). Best time to prune heavily is late November thru early January. Sorry for any confusion.
