I’m interested in converting a section of our front yard grass into garden. I am hoping to do a smothering technique but I don’t want to use cardboard or newspaper. We have double shredded mulch and plenty of leaves and some backyard compost. Do you have recommendations on layering order and thickness to help kill the grass and return nutrients to the soil in preparation for spring planting? Thank you!

I have a very old, very large rhodo that started to suffer die-back this spring, and it continues to cause significant loss. The die-back starts with the leaves, then progresses to major branches. Soil is well-maintained with adequate pH.

Autumn Blaze Maple Wind Damage #889847

Hello, Our autumn blaze maple was significantly damaged due to high winds this summer. The main trunk was broken (2 images attached), however the remaining branches appeared to thrive through the summer/fall. Considering this damage and type of tree, would it be just a matter of time until the tree dies from this injury (and we should look to replace in the near future), or will the tree be able to overcome and continue to grow relatively healthy? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

On my MSU soil test results, there is a lime index of 72. But my pH is 7.0. Why would I need an acidity correction? And if I did, what does the lime index mean and how would you add lime to adjust based on the index of 72?

I intend to transplant a crape myrtle shrub, & have been waiting to do so after reading the best time to transplant is late winter during dormancy. My concern is that in late winter is when the ground becomes very muddy & water logged here in Oregon, and I've often found those conditions even at the beginning of spring. When do you suggest I transplant? I fear it's already too wet, and I wasn't planning on adding much to my native soil. Thanks

Penstemon- Winter Care: How far to cut back foliage and should I cover with leaves? #889843

I am getting conflicting info on Penstemon. I have 2. One is "Red Riding Hood" and the other is the more traditional light purple variety. I have cut back the dead flower stems. But, how far back should I cut the foliage? Also, should plants be covered on top with leaves for winter or should leaves be just around the base of the plant? Thank you!
