  • What's eating my sweet corn silk? #891569

    I have planted sweet corn the last 3 seasons. The first was a perfect success with the following 2 being failures. The issue is very sporadic and limited pollination due to a lack of silk. Upon close inspection, I have found small beetles, mostly green with some having other color variations, eating the silky of the ears from outside and right down into the husk. What are these beetles and how do I stop them? I looked through the extension knowledge base but nothing seemed to quite match

    Fringe trees and emerald ash borer #891561

    Hello - I am thinking of planting two fringe trees in my Silver Spring, Maryland, back yard.  Information about these trees mentions their susceptibility to emerald ash borer damage.  Are emerald ash borers a problem now in Maryland, and should I rethink my choice of fringe trees?  I certainly do not want to worsen the problem of EAB!

    I have noticed lots of trees that seem to be dying in my area. Is it the grey moss I see on many of the trees that is killing them. I recently noticed some of this moss on a juniper in my yard. If yes, what can I do

    I recently had to excavate a sizable area of my turf for a stop waste valve replacement. I have Bermuda grass around my city trees and I think that is fairly drought tolerant. Is there another grass seed I should consider? Because my turf surrounds my city trees it makes sense to keep turf here. Any suggestions for seeding?

    I received info re the above that I should cover my young plants as soon as I plant them in the garden - May and definitely through June and keep monitoring all summer. How can covering them in May, etc "stop" the aphids and cabbage worms when they area already living in the ground and just have to come up through the soil to my plants? When I cover them, should the cover "not" be touching the plants or do I just lay the cover on top of the plants? Do I ever remove the cover at all during the months of May and June? .

    I saw on your site that this cone-like plant feeds off the roots of our local manzanita and madrones. How does this affect the overall health of the plant that it's parasitically attached to? And do any animals eat this plant, or can humans? Or is it poisonous? Does it have any know uses such as a plant-based fabric dye, natural pesticide, etc?

    Black Locust Tree Wood Chips #891545

    There was a black locust tree in my backyard that was removed and turned into wood chips. I have read that black locust can be toxic to humans but I want to know if putting the wood chips in my vegetable garden will leach out toxic chemicals that my vegetables will absorb. Can I use black locust mulch in my vegetable garden safely?
