Hello, we have a 800 square feet of native prairie gardens in our yard, with one of the primary flowers being purple coneflower. This year we noticed many of our coneflower plants getting white spots on the leaves, and some of them would also get yellow and brown spots. The heads of the coneflowers would also sometimes start turning black and rotting. Our questions are; how should we handle these diseased coneflowers as we cut our garden back this fall and is there anything we can do to prevent this from spreading or occurring again?
I need to identify this maple species for a removal permit from the city. Can you identify it for me? Can you tell me more about how intrusive and destructive the root system.
Thank you!
Hi, I have raised beds for vegetables and recently added about 6 inches of gardening soil to the bed I grow garlic and onions in in hopes of improving their productivity. I am considering whether to add about 6 inches of soil to my existing asparagus bed as well. Right now, the soil in it is about 10-12 inches deep. Would adding soil hurt the root balls by burying them too deeply or otherwise harm their productivity? Would it help productivity? Next spring will be year three of growing asparagus, so I'm looking forward to finally harvesting some!
Thanks for your time.
I had a very large and beautiful ornamental cherry tree in my front yard. Last year during our week-long ice storm, it lost 3/4 of it canopy. Now it looks very straggly and I'm wondering if it is worth it to keep the tree? Will it grow into its once beautiful canopy again? Or is it best to have the tree taken down?
My crape myrtle tree recently became infested with white specks on the bark along the trunk of the tree and on the branches. Can you let me know what these specks are and what I can do to remove them? Thank you
Hi UMD extension,
First I have to say I really appreciate your support and knowledge. I am currently am looking at how to rejuvenate my yard after a backyard wedding. First I hope it's not to late in the season to overseed. My plan was to likely Aerate first because of the compression of the wedding then overseed. My next question is what seed / grass types I should look for a yard that is basically a sleep hill in the back that is pretty shaded in the summer but the lowe part of the yard and my front yard get a ton of sun. Also many of the bare areas get high foot and doggie traffic so I wondering what might handle the slope but also handle my dog/active family lifestyle. I also am looking to make sure I am handling it in and creating a lawn that is supportive of the local ecosystem as possible. I am in the colesville/silverspring area.
Thanks so much
