Will this Arborvitae Thuja Occidentalis Brandon survive from deer #890617

Asked December 08, 2024, 12:55 PM EST

To our dismay we discovered that deer had eaten our Arborvitae last week. What are the chances they will survive? We aren’t too hopeful. All other evergreens were spared. What type shall we replace these with that deer don’t like. We are looking for a privacy evergreen between two houses. Thank you for your advice.

Hi Nancy,

Oh no ! Deer , umph. Don't throw in the towel yet. Wrap the plants with burlap or wire fence them completely ( so the deer can't reach in from above and chew them. I think you have a good chance of them coming  back if you can keep them protected.

I've seen tons of critter damage that I thought would surely be a death blow only to see plants slowly come back. I suggest you place permanent fencing next Spring because they are going to need it for many years.

The battle is NOT over !
