I lost most of my grass in the drought this summer, and the mockberry took over. I removed two established new england aster earlier this year which both had a rust problem. Cleaning up after the dog today, I saw this on the mockberry in the "lawn". Is this rust?

Black spots on leaves of a Meyer Lemon plant #890621

Every fall, when I bring in my Meyer Lemon plant, the leaves develop spots and fall off to the point that there are almost no leaves left in April, when I move the plant outside. Then the leaves return, but all of the tiny fruit drop off the leaves. Attached are photos of a leaf (top and bottom). What can I do? Do I need to use a systemic pesticide/fungide?

I had my first year of apples from a few trees in my 20 tree backyard orchard and all of them were full of moth frass. What can I do to prevent them from damaging my apples? I have read pick up summer dropped apples, spray, and traps. I am wondering about specifics, what kind of spray at what time. What kind of traps should I set and when. Will this Arborvitae Thuja Occidentalis Brandon survive from deer #890617

To our dismay we discovered that deer had eaten our Arborvitae last week. What are the chances they will survive? We aren’t too hopeful. All other evergreens were spared. What type shall we replace these with that deer don’t like. We are looking for a privacy evergreen between two houses. Thank you for your advice.

How do I test soil, before I plant, to determine its drainage? I would like to be able to determine if it is well-drained or not well-drained. Thank you for your time. Plants: Various flowering, native to Maryland, deciduous shrubs and holly. Location: Flat Foundation beds and a large sloped area.

Protecting smooth hydrangeas #890613

I have several smooth hydrangeas (Annabelle and Incrediaball). Last winter, the rabbits ate the shrubs to the ground. But they returned and grew beautifully. I know this type of shrub grows from new wood, but I am wondering if I should protect them from rabbits eating them to the ground. It doesn’t seem healthy for any plant to be taken down to the ground every winter. Or are the rabbits doing me a favor by pruning them for me? Since they grow from new wood I know the old branches will not produce. Thank you.
