  • Why vegetables won't grow in my raised beds #891814

    I have raised beds with about 5" of soil in them, with southern exposure. When I plant anything other than tomatoes or flowers (such as spinach, carrots, beans, etc.), it will grow to about 2"-4" and quit growing. Is it getting too much sun, and if so, how can I correct that problem. Or does my soil need more fertilizer? What ratio of fertilizer do you recommend? I am in Pueblo, CO 81008.

    protecting young trees during cold snap - test #891808

    I planted a number of young native trees & shrubs this past fall (both bare-root and pot grown). Normally I wouldn't worry about them during the cold weather but we are experiencing extreme cold this week (Howard County, MD). Is it necessary to try to protect them by wrapping in burlap/covering w a sheet/etc or if they are native to this area can I assume they will survive? If protection is advised, is it too late to do so (after already several days of near zero temperatures)? I'm not worried about loss of blooms, just survival. Thanks!

    Have a NON time critical question: Looking for information (or contact person) on how to design and build a solar heating (and storage) unit for heating a small (10 x12) hobby greenhouse. I am a new (3yr) resident to the Rogue Valley (Sam's Valley) and would like to build a solar (water?) heater to help off set the freezing temperatures . The goal is to make the system as passive as possible.

    What is the average pH of soil along the Rogue River in the Redwood area of Grants Pass? The soil is somewhat sandy and I am thinking that it is therefore flood plain or ancient river bottom soil?
