I followed this interesting thread to the bottom and it pretty much summed up the problem we are having with our honey locust. However, the final note was “I will take a look at your sample you dropped off”. Wondering if there was a resolution to this issue? It may help others out with a similar problem.

Could my Ash Trees have Emerald Ash Borer? #587720

We just built our new home on Portage Point Rd. in Escanaba,MI 49829. Have you heard that this area has EAB? We have a collection of 4-5 Ash Trees that have some dead limbs, but no other signs of the infection. I couldn't find holes in the bark, or woodpecker damage. Just wondering if we should be concerned. Thanks, Carol Irving

Spider catching trick. #587015

Hello,

When trying to catch a house spider (in the UK), I've found that if I tread firmly or stamp on the floor near (not on) the spider, it will freeze and not move for long enough for me to get a glass and card. If the spider is running, this trick doesn't work - it simply runs faster.





So is the freezing a defence mechanism or some other strategy?

Is there a way to prevent or reduce these blights before I plant. I usually mix composted manure to the soil before planting. Should I try something else? Thanks, Jeff  GO SPARTANS!

Syrup frommaple trees treated with systemac #551926

Is it ok to consume maple syrup from a tree treated with systemac liquid treatment. I have been treating my ash tress with the systemac liquid for about ten years now. I also treat my maples as we have had a problem in the past with scale. I treat them in mid to late November each year

Red Tip Photinia dropping bright red leaves #551840

I have several red tip photinia's that have bright red leaves but so many of them are falling off, the leaves are not wilted or brown they look like healthy leaves. We didn't loose many leaves in the fall at all!

We back up to the South side of South Table Mountain in Golden and the upper layer of the backyard consists of 3 Pinyons, 1 Ponderosa, 1 large tree (unknown type), various bushes (lilacs, Apache Plume, scrub oak (?), Hawthorne (?), etc.), and native grasses.  We are trying to maintain the native grasses yet sometimes difficult with our pup running around up there yet she loves it!  We are looking for some advice on how to best re-vegetate the bare areas, e.g., native seeds, matting to establish the grasses, etc.  Thank you.

Barberry question #491670

We are undertaking a landscapping project at our home fixing a multitude of issues. In trying to determine what plants to use I have become confused. I was reading past blog posts from the Renegade Gardener and in passing he mentioned dropping Barberry from his list of preferred plants because it has been determined to be invasive. But when I went to Gerten's I found it was being sold. I asked them how they can sell it if it is on the invasive species list. They didn't have an answer. I have since found it at multiple locations. Can you please clarify this for me? It had been on my plant list.

dormant seeding, post-emergent weed killer, pre-emergent for crabgrass #491539

1) I have dormant seeded in the past and plan to do so again this fall. I will aerate, fertilize, then dormant seed in November. I know I should apply weed killer for dandelions and violets and creeping charlie (%$#*) first. I use triclopyr (Ortho Chickweed, Oxalys killer) for violets and have fought them for years, as my adjacent neighbors do no weed control. Mecorprop-p, 24-D, Dicamba (Ortho Weed B Gone) is what I usually use for dandelions. Is triclopyr also a good choice for dandelion and creeping charlie? Or should I (can I) mix the two in my sprayer? 2) How much time should I allow after the post-emergent before dormant seeding? 3) I have found that dormant seeding (I am trying to thicken lawn, fill bare spots, and add more sustainable grass types) prevents me from putting down pre-emergent for crabgrass in the spring. I assume it will prevent some of the dormant seed from germinating. Do you have any ideas on how to work around this issue? Thank You -
