The number of apples damaged by codling moth last fall was so great I must do something to control them. I've read through control ideas from the UMN extension site. I'm intent on not using a pesticide if at all possible. Will homemade traps with vinegar, molasses, and ammonia help ? Will pheromone traps help? Spray with a horticulture oil at the proper time ? Spray a fine clay over the apples when they are very small to create a physical barrier ? Use CYD-X , granulosis virus, as a spray for the larvae ? Banding the trunk and smearing on the sticky petroleum product to capture the larvae ? Thanks for any direction you may be able to offer. Loren M

How long do the trunk injections protect the ash trees as long as the injections are done correctly.  Does this protection window depend on the treatment level ?  Does this also depend on the type of pesticide being used (tree-age g-4) (tree-age R-10) etc.  I have looked at the labels and have not found this info on the labels.  Thank you for your time and response!

insect eating leaves of citrus trees #862389

I have seven citrus trees such as Myers Lemons in containers and I keep them inside during the winter months. Something is eating the leaves aggressively and I have not been able to stop them with insecticide soap spray and neem oil stray. I have never been able to actually see what is doing it. The only evidence I see is damaged leaves and an occasional tiny spider-like web. The problem also has moved from one tree to another.

What can I do to eliminate these pests?

I'm transitioning my yard to Colorado native plants and am thinking about getting into in-ground vermicomposting using a worm bin. However given all the effort I'm putting in above ground, I do not want to use a non-native worm species. Can you recommend any worm species native to Colorado that I could use for this?

Planting vine to grow above 6' fence #862342

I am looking to plant some type of vine that would grow up some type of trellis that we would attach to our fence with the goal of it growing and vining above the top of the 6' fence. Attached is the picture of where we hope to put this. The picture is facing East, so this area is in full sun most of the day (except for the small strip along south-side fence that stays in the shade). Right now, there are 3 serviceberries planted in front of the fence that have not done very well as far as growing tall enough to provide extra privacy from the alleyway. My questions are: 1) is there a vine that you would recommend? From reading, I was leaning toward the Honeysuckle (Lonicera species) Blanche Sandman variety, but am open to other suggestions. 2) Would we plant the vine plant in the ground and then guide the vine to grow up a trellis (that we have yet to build)? 3) how many plants of the vine would we need? One on either end? Or one on either end plus one in the middle? 4) would the trellis need to be wood or would the vine grow up and attach to wire if we used that? 5) would you recommend removing the service berries or could we keep them and plant the vines behind them closer to the fence?

Black Satin thornless blackberry care and Ilex Sky Pencil #862333

Last season, I planted a Black Satin thornless blackberry in a container on my deck against a south facing wall where it receives full sun most of the day; I do not have yard space to plant it in the ground. It did not produce fruit. Since it is a solitary plant, will it produce fruit, or do I need another blackberry plant? I do have veggies, herbs, annuals and a blueberry plant in other containers on this small deck, so I am hoping that is enough to encourage pollinators. The container had soil that was 12" in diameter and 7" deep. I am thinking I need to move it to a bigger container. I do have a 5' trellis in the pot. What size container do you recommend? I see online that this is a semi-erect blackberry; is that correct? Since it did not fruit, should I prune it at all at this time? When and with what do you recommend I fertilize it? Do you have any advice about watering through the growing season and also do I need to water at all in the winter? Behind the same deck, I planted 6 pots of Ilex Sky Pencil, one to a pot, between an east facing fence and our hot tub, which is covered except when we use it. I kept them watered through the summer, but I thought they would be ok without extra water through the winter. Now 3 are completely browned out and the other 3 are green, but the foliage is crispy and falls off at my touch. What did I do wrong? Is there hope any of them will begin to grow again, or should I just remove and plant again? Is there a better choice to plant as a screen along this fence? Thanks for your help.

Little bittercress removal #862264

Little bittercress has taken over gardens. I have spend 10 hours removing by hand in one area, and have more than 4x more to go. Help!! I removed old, woody lavender last fall and replanted lavender starts which are very small. So all the area has been over taken with bittercress weeds mostly, plus a few others. It's overwhelming. My hope is to remove and add soil amendment over all. Better ideas?? Photos show: garden before lavender removed, that same garden now, and another garden area partially weeded by hand.

What fruit tree does well on the east side Bend, Oregon, with full sun year around? We live in an area known as the "Orchard District" on the east side of Bend near the corner of 8th and Revere. Can yoju specify a variety of such a tree(s), and any special planting instructions. Is it too late to plant this year? Should we buy bare root or with root ball? How large a tree should I buy? How deep should it be planted? Any special instructions? We're replacing an old flowering plum that has not been well cared-for.

White Pine stand of trees falling on/near my house #861912

My house is on a hill in a stand of white pines that are at least 50 years old. Most have been affected by an insect when they were young that caused them to split their trunks into two or three trunks. In recent high wind storms (Jan 2024), these trees have started to fall, some quite close to our house and one that fell on the house. I am worried that more trees might fall and, since they are about 80 feet tall, others could fall on the house. 1) Is there something we can do to preserve these trees, and protect them from falling? 2) Should I take the trees closest to the house down? 3) If I take trees down, what should I put in their place? If there is someone you recommend that could look at these trees and help us decide what to do, please let me know.

Weed Identifiction And Treatment #861731

I have this weed that is taking over the yard (2 acres). I noticed a few of these a couple years back. Now they are everywhere. I have used Scott's weed and feed. Some of the area has had moss out treatment (iron). Any help with a treatment would be appreciated. I live in Tillamook on a hillside with only a few homes in the area. Regards Jake

so I have four large deciduous type bushes that I’ve had in my yard for well over 20 years. The only issue I ever had with them in the past was bag worms which were treated years ago and we keep an eye on it every year, and if not had to treat the past few years. they have always looked very healthy. This year I noticed several dead branches on all four of the plants. as I was trying to do a video to show a friend of mine, who majored in horticulture, I incidentally shook one of the branches and a billowing cloud of powdery substance came out, and it happened throughout all four plants, regardless of the health of the branch. I can’t include videos on this Forum so I tried to do some screenshots from the videos. If you need or want to see more and you have some other way to access videos that I could send, just let me know.

Our 1-acre yard appears to have many soil types, even though primarily clay. One area uncovered for wildflowers/milkweed appears dead soil. Can't find even 1 worm. Think previous homeowners have done things unhelpful to various soil areas. I'd like to map out the yard for what's best to grow where, and learn how to either amend bad/dead soil, or realize it must be replaced in total.
