Spring herb planting #862331

Asked March 23, 2024, 4:43 PM EDT

I live in Bend and want to plant an herb garden using starter plants in my above ground planter. When can I safely plant them so they will not be damaged by frost? Also what type of planting mix should I use? Thank you.

Hello Robert,
Thank you for your question about growing herbs in your raised planter. The following publications provide information about preparing your planter and recommended soils:

You can grow a variety of herbs in Central Oregon. Many herbs can be grown through the summer, but you will want to select varieties hardy to USDA Zones 3-4 to have them overwinter.

Herbs that are frost sensitive can be planted about the second week in June. Have frost protection on hand given that our climate can be unpredictable. Herbs that grow well in Central Oregon include oregano, thyme, lemon balm, mints, and parsley.

“Like warm-season vegetables, herbs considered “warm season” thrive best when air and soil temperatures are consistently above 60ºF. Herbs benefit from cold night protection in the same way that vegetables do. Herb gardeners often remove developing buds from plants to prolong the length of time leaves can be harvested.”
