I have a Quick Fire Hardy Hydrangea about 6 years old, it's growing nicely but not sure when to prune it, I hear talk about "New wood blooms" and " Old wood blooms" for the following spring. Can you pleas tell me when I should prune it" Regards, Mike

Hello Mike,

Thanks for reaching out to the UNH Extension Infoline. Pruning hydrangeas can be confusing, especially given all the different types!

Quick Fire is a panicle hydrangea, which is very common for both it's beautiful blooms as well as it's cold hardiness. It blooms on new growth so we recommend pruning this shrub in the dormant season- late winter to early spring (February to early April) before bud break.

UNH Extension has a handy fact sheet on pruning hydrangeas that I suggest you have a look at. For the most readable version, download it by clicking on the blue "Download Resource" button near the top of the article. It will open in a new browser tab.

I hope this helps and please get in touch with any further questions!

Thank you, I tried YouTube but it was too generic, so I appreciate you giving me specific instructions.
Regards,
Mike
