A lot of salal bushes have leaves turning gray/white with purple spots. It would appear that you are seeing plants infected with a fungi named spot anthracnose. This fungi produces spots that are grayish white with a red-brown border and purple margin. The fungi has been controlled by removal of the dead, dying and infected leaves from the plant and cleaning the area below the plant. There are no chemical controls labeled specifically for this fungi but fixed copper has proven effective in some cases.
Phyllosticta species are also a common cause of brown spots on salal in western Oregon. In addition to P. pyrolae and P. vaccinii, we also see Dasyschypha sp. and Pestalopezia sp. locally, and a whole host of other fungi are found on salal elsewhere in the pacific northwest. Phyllosticta leaf spots are nearly circular and brown with pale centers.
