jcnrlb posted Winter Storage of Canna Bulbs
We have numerous canna bulbs growing, some planted in the ground and some in pots. The pots have already come inside for the winter. My question relates to the suggested method for storing the bulbs over the winter. The bulbs I attempted to save from last fall dried up and died and I had to discard them all. What can I do to preserve the bulbs over the winter so that they can be planted again in the spring? When the foliage stops producing in the pots we brought in, what should I do with those bulbs? Leave them in the pots or remove them and store them somewhere else?

In the fall, dig up the rhizomes, cut the stems back to 2 to 3 inches, and let them dry.

Leave them in a box in a cool part of the house where they will not freeze, such as a basement where the temperatures range between 40 to 50 degrees.

Finding that place where the temperature is between 40 and 50 can be a challenge. Most basements are warmer than that and most garages are colder than that.

They recommend washing dahlia tubers (bulbs) before storing. Then store them the same as cannas. In addition, check the dahlias occasionally for rot.

In cases where tuberous roots like dahlias have some rot, cut back until you reach clean white, fleshy tissue again. These structures may need attention and care even during their dormant period.
