Harrison apple tree is about 7 years old. Main trunk split into two main limbs about 3' up from the ground, One limb died last year. How far down, or how close to main trunk, should limb be trimmed? Should cut be sealed? Is now the best time to cut the branch?

I ordered and received my garlic bulbs to plant, and then for life reasons missed my window for fall Planting. I have an east facing slope That is terraced for gardening and gets sun all a.m. and most of the afternoon. When should I plant this garlic? And should I move it from its previous location last year? Good morning, We have a healthy mature ash tree sending roots out under a parking space and breaking it up. There is also a nearby sidewalk area that is being pushed up and we are guessing that is also a result of the ash tree roots. We do not want to remove the tree. Is there a procedure we can follow to limit the spread of the root that is breaking the asphalt? We worry that cutting this root area would affect the health and well-being of the entire tree. But, we need the parking space/s. and we don't want anyone tripping on the sidewalk. I've read about using a root shield. Is that a possible solution? How much of the root system can this tree afford to lose? It's growing at the corner of a parking lot so already 3 sides of its root area would be covered with parking lot. This other quarter is very valuable for this tree. Thank you.

Hi! I live in the Hazelwood neighborhood in Portland, OR and am building a no-dig vegetable garden in the back yard. My home was built in 1941 on an old apple orchard and I’m concerned about heavy metals in the soil. My main garden is planned to start about 8 feet from the house and the most convenient place for me to grow vining veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, etc is actually 12-18” from the foundation. As it’s no dig, I’m leaving the soil as is with a layer of cardboard, then 6” of compost on top initially to plant into. What steps should I take to ensure that I’m not feeding my family lead, or anything else nasty that might be in the soil? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hello, I live in Montrose and have a large ash tree in the front yard which I'd like to clean up. The grass has grown up around the trunk of the tree so I'd like to strip some of that away and make a large ring of mulch around the base of the tree. However I don't want to harm the tree in the process. Is there a way to do that safely, and what would be the best time of year (for the tree) to tackle this? Thanks for your help!
