Trimming Haralson Apple Tree #892924

Asked February 21, 2025, 1:14 PM EST

Harrison apple tree is about 7 years old. Main trunk split into two main limbs about 3' up from the ground, One limb died last year. How far down, or how close to main trunk, should limb be trimmed? Should cut be sealed? Is now the best time to cut the branch?

Otter Tail County Minnesota

Expert Response

Do cut off the dead limb, and cut it close to the trunk as possible, but be sure to leave the branch collar intact. This is the raised area at the base of the branch where it meets the trunk.  It's best to not seal the cut; it will heal better on its own.  Now is a good time to prune the branch.  Any time between February and April is ideal.
