Do you have any idea what these might be. We are finding them in multiple places in our driveway. They look almost like a dark wooden flower or a "turd" that got pressed in the center. They are each about 4-5" in diameter and when I step on them, they are powdery and have a look like a mushroom in some sections.

dear LJB, This growing season we had mostly what i would call rust colored die back mainly on flowering plants in our newly rebuilt raised boxes.. it was glaringly noticeable on the Dalia stalks that where dug up from our old rotting wood grow bins some sliced in half by the { eager but plant knowledge lacking high school kids} led by a master carpenter in building our new raised beds of which we have 3- 4ft X 8ft boxes and two 3ft X 8ft grow boxes. it was also most noticeable on the sunflower stalks.The. rust colored leaves where not evident on the fruit and vegetable plants. We that is Premier Living, Assisted Living Facility had soil tests done in November that showed unusually high amounts of Phosphorous and potassium and generally low amounts of Sulfur.and of course Nitrogen.as you answered before P and the K are probably due to a sampling error or in this case a sampling size error. I went thru one of the Mysoiltesting.com kits and found the size of the soil sample sent in to the company to be 29.6 cc The bottom line of this novela is that prior to this years crops of flowers and vegetables ALL the plants looked healthy after a soil test at the wrong time of the year and your recommendations for amendments. I know this is not much information to base an answer on the only other factor i can add is the Growing Gardens group placed "compost" of unknown composition in all but one of the new grow beds.To me it looked like mothing but bark fines and sand.

This nest was found in our front yard in Littleton.  I assume it fell from our Locust tree or maybe blew across from elsewhere?

Any ideas as to what kind of bug would make it?

I live in Chardon Ohio. I have young 5’ trees being shipped to my house in April. They will consist of chestnuts, apple, apple-crab, and crab-apples. I got horse manure from my neighbor at the end of October. It has been sitting in a pile until this week when I dug holes 2’x 2’ wide x 18” deep. I spread out 2 shovels full of the manure at the bottom of the holes. Then about 8-10” of dirt on top of it, then spread 2 more shovels full on top of that, then put the rest of the dirt on top, then spread 2 more shovels full of manure on that. The plan was to redig the holes when the trees come but dig down deeper to 2’ mix it all up then plant the trees. But a friend told me I should not have put any in the bottom of the holes, and I should not have used so much. Am I just going to kill my new trees? Please help! Thank you!

The DC Booth Fish Hatchery is dredging there fish pond and has offered the organic matter for fertilizer to Master Gardeners in our club. Is it safe for vegetables It is fresh-so how long would it need to cure before using? Anything else you can share is appreciated

I want to develop about 10 acres of previously tilled ground into pasture for rotational grazing of cattle for personal use. The soil is sandy with some areas of clay silt, not loamy anywhere. The land has been fallow since 2019. I am looking for advice on appropriate grass/forage types for this soil use and region. I'd like to build up the pasture for year or two as I prepare for cattle.

I am wondering if you could explain to me and a 5th grade student why sunflowers turn toward the sun? What is the science behind this?
